I'll tell you one thing that *is* definitely garbage about DR:
So, yeah. Raid-wide damage is a thing in all the encounters. And neither of the other groups spared a healer. So we just died... again... and again... and again to aggregate damage.

That's why you keep a Cure IV in your kit.

DR Savage is pretty good. Aside from pure essences being required to survive and do enough damage for the DPS checks. There are obviously more bosses and obstacles like limited and low raise chances. Every full alliance wipe requires leaving the instance and starting over from the beginning so that adds a lot of time and resources.
If anything I feel they should have made essences required in normal mode like savage to survive mechanics or at the bare minimum add some semi-lax DPS checks that way it doesn't feel like just a few people end up carrying the weight on damage because that's the reality today. If you used a raid calculator, you know this is true.
But I guess they felt failing mechanics x2 was enough, I remember someone had the nerve to say it was stupid it was x2 and death. Well its designed so you don't brute force mechanics and do things right.
Also you don't need healers in your party to survive in DR normal, just get a few people to carry Cure IV. But alas that requires using actions in NM. You know how that is....

I did a run with 4 people and no healer, because half the group dropped when we didn't have one.
Only 1 person died the whole run (the tank, because he ended up with hate at one point), as well all grabbed healing essences.
Guess no one in your group was willing to be a team player.

Yep. I've done it with no healers in my group as well but between a few of us with some cure lost actions things melted extra fast and no one died. It is entirely possible.
It's my favourite raid in the game at the moment. I love everything about the story, boss fights and aesthetics - though I do agree that there's some unfortunate but avoidable problems. The issue with lost actions not being mandatory is that the time it takes to run the raid is artificially bloated as a consequence of many people not using the most efficient lost actions. As far as the mechanics go, once they 'click' things tend to be pretty smooth. The first time I did the raid I died a lot and only a few mechanics made immediate sense. Yet in other runs, I rarely find myself dying unless the rest of my party is wiping.
Overall, I'm just really disappointed that we're not getting the third planned act for the Save the Queen storyline. I'd really love to see more content designed in Matsuno's style - I adore the Ivalice games and I would not have bothered investing in FFXIV had it not been for the style originally being very similar to the Ivalice games across the board.
Cure lost actions are your friend.

Yeah, dying is apart of learning. You're going to die while you learn.
Why is that such a wild concept? Have you played any other games before?

Yeah I remember I had some RDM that got so mad about being the only person dying with no healers. I said you should at-least pop an essence for HP and damage since they had no valor and said something like they were using lost chainspell. Like okay you just want to do damage at minimal HP, and don't even want to carry Cure IV either to help. Some people just are selfish, they eventually left the party in some baby rage for a healer party while we several of us used Cure IV along with damage actions and did just fine.I did a run with 4 people and no healer, because half the group dropped when we didn't have one.

A fine example of people out there who have no real understanding of actions, and why bozja is the way it is. You can be any role you want with the right actions.

Resistance Potions exist and are easily acquired and useful for any role. And raid wide aoe's are so infrequent that you should be good to go if you're doing mechanics properly. If you don't, well, that's on you.
Bloodbath exists for the melee.
Lost Cure should always be in your allotment for just this reason.
