I mean the best story in a video game was a ps2 launch window title. The best stealth game was released in 98. The best fps in 01. The best rpg in 02. The list goes on and on. We long since been in cultural and creative decay in the gaming sphere.

I get a heads up on new stuff all the time, depends a lot on genre. You wont see me much with platformers or "twitch reflex games". Fact is, a lot of the AAA Games come with a huge freaking price tag which is an instant turnoff. Also some of them look good on the surface but lack depth..I see them as they come and determine what interests me.What about you? Do you keep up with new games? I’ve noticed it can be complicated for me to focus on two games at a time.
P.S Devs and marketing......Nier Replicant looks awesome..but close to $100 AUD?
Thanks, no
Personally I tend to focus on one game at a time, I've taken plenty of breaks from FFXIV and it's always because I get into another game. I still go back to FFXI sometimes and if it's not an MMO I really like the Codemasters F1 series of racing games as I'm a massive F1 fan. X-Com 2 took me away from other games for a long time as I played that quite obsessively for probably about 6 months, I will go back eventually as well. Civilization is another game franchise I zone in on and like X-Com 2 it's a Firaxis game and as a developer they really embrace player mods and it breathes so much life into both games. For the last 10 years I have traditionally taken a break when the latest CoD game comes out but I'm done with that franchise now, the playerbase is an absolute cess pit and the publisher has ruined any fun in that game in the pursuit of profits and MLG glory.Something I never understood is how do people can ply the same game for very long periods of time or not pay attention to upcoming ones.
Gaming is all about technology, and I think new games constantly try to find new ways to impress the players.
I’ve seen a lot of FF XIV players grinding the dungeons over and over just to get an item or better stats… I honestly don’t understand this.

I keep up with games from indie to AAA quite closely. I check several gaming news sites multiple times a day. And, if something that interests me comes along I have no issues at all with taking some time away from FF14 to play those games. Thing is, right now I'm really enjoying FF14 and finding a good number of things to do while at the same time I'm not really finding any other games really grabbing my attention. The next game I'm particularly looking forward to is Kena so if I'm still on a FF14 kick when it comes out I'll just manage my time between the two.
I short, I am interested in all games but haven't found another one recently that grabs me so I've been happily occupied with FF14.
Since i started FFXIV i started to focus a bit less on new games but i always look on what's new. I played other games at the same time as FFXIV, a lot of MHW, ace combat 5&7, Red Dead Redemption 2, the mass effect trilogy, right now i'm into monster hunter stories 2.
There were a few games that didnt come to mind when I typed that, but to add to the List, XVI, the Pokemon remakes, BoTW2, and probably more FF7 remake xD
Hmm, time to try to guess these...
No idea on that first one. Way too vague. I don't remember any strong story launch titles on PS2 though, so that's on me, maybe.
Thief for the stealth game, I think?
Halo: Combat Evolved?
Hoo boy... hmm... hah... hmm... Golden Sun the Lost Age? No? Uhh... how about... .hack?
Once gaming hit the mainstream corporate took over in nearly every company. They went from being companies centered around the game developers to the game developers just being wings of the company.
Transitioning to 3-D and the ever more realistic graphics and audio options also stifled creativity. When you have more constraints you're forced to become more creative and work with what you have. When the sky's the limit, you often forget your wings can only carry you so high.
Also
I enjoyed both of your posts, your response to Chocopuni's irrational post even more so. Please, look me up on Excal sometime. I'll kill a dungeon with you or something.

Silent Hill 2, is the best story although I was slightly off on the date. It was a little under a year into the ps2. Thief is correct for the best stealth game as the depth of sneaking hasn't been touched to that level since. Return To Castle Wolfenstein for the shooter as it's great both as a class based shooter and an arena shooter. Best rpg is Morrowind in all its obtuse, broken and janky glory. That whole era of mid 90s- mid 00s hasn't been topped in the gaming sphere. Most games these days lack character and feel soulless.Hmm, time to try to guess these...

I never got to play Silent Hill 2, but maybe I'll emulate it at some point when I'm in the mood for horror. :Oc so highly thought of, guess I can't ignore it anymore.Silent Hill 2, is the best story although I was slightly off on the date. Wracking my brain trying to think of a game that'd I'd be confident to say, it's the best story in all of video games, but my brain only generates titles that I'm nostalgic for which is far too many. Some of my favorite stories for games I guess though would be Xenogears, Terranigma, KOTOR 2, Lufia II(SNES), and Ogre Battle 64.
It's hard to beat Morrowind jank for raw fun. Not too mention all that juicy lore and the Telvanni. "I'm a god, how can you kill a god? What a grand and intoxicating innocence, heh." "Oh please, Nerevar, spare me."

Both KOTOR one and two as well as their offspring the Mass Effect series all had a great story, its was the high watermark of Bioware history. I never played Silent Hill two so I can't compare unfortunately.
I couldn't get into Morrowind so to me it obviously wasn't the best rpg, I was more of a Baldurs Gate and Neverwinter kinda guy.
Edit: can't believe I forgot Dragon Age, the sequels sucked but Origins was epic
