Now that Asmongold has decided to play, anyone worried on the server he will choose?

I've come to the probably unpopular opinion that this game needs Asmongold and more like him and yes, his fans.

WARNING SEVERAL VERY UNPOPULAR THOUGHTS INCOMING.

I've only been playing this game since September, so a while, but not as long as many. In that time I've discovered a great many things I DISLIKE about this community.

First of all, it's every bit as toxic as any other MMO, but thanks to the sometimes heavy handed enforcement of the ToS, it's just shown in other ways than outright toxicity, mostly as massive passive aggression and reporting people for the most minor of offences.

Second, it collectively has a very cult like mentality. Everyone is awesome and loves you until you dare say any aspect of the game is not absolutely perfect (with a couple of exceptions like housing). I have literally seen streamers say they don't stream the game because they know that if they dislike anything the FFXIV "cult" will effectively try to cancel them. Or on the forums (mostly reddit in my experience, I haven't read or posted here as much), if you post a negative opinion, you will watch your posts score instantly drop to the point where it's hidden.

Third, the sheer amount of self righteousness this community displays when other MMOs are mentioned. You can see this when anytime WoW is mentioned it's always portrayed by the FFXIV community as an absolute hellscape of toxicity, when in fact it's no worse than here. It's toxicity is just more in the open and not hidden behind more cowardly acts. For example someone being toxic in WoW may call you an ***hole and they ****ed your mom, but that's the end of it. Someone here will just come up with some excuse to quietly slink off and report you to the GMs to try to get you banned for the slightest thing that offends them.

Fourth, Gatekeeping, nothing needs to be said, just look at the community freakout over Asmon announcing his intention to play

Just because WoW lets people go nuts and be horrible doesn't mean XIV should do that either. I'm only addressing that point tho because Blizzard has a shit system for people. I agree with your other point on how people here can be too defendly but I LIKE that the mods FORCE people to behave. Can they go too far? Yes, but I'll take this system here over what ever the hell WoW has anyday. WE do have an issue with group think tho. Never forget ScottZone.

Problem in any bigger community to be fair, people seem to lose the ability to think for themselves.
It's pretty sickening.

The internet is aware, but there are many many people on it who are rude because they can be without repercussion. Funny how again it's the rules of where you are that make people "nice" or not.

Emotions going wild often in those discussions. I mean just look at this forum when Asmongold was first mentioned couple weeks ago. Per definition 95% was rude comments lol.

I'm pretty sure that was the thread where something like the first seven out of ten posts were the resident troll(s) and their alts drumming up a fake fear campaign over how terrible it was going to be or staging a fake argument. I remember thinking it was such an awful look to anyone coming in new to the forum even though it was blatantly false to anyone familiar with the posters.

Absolutely. It's a rampant issue we've had for a long time now and was very noticable in that thread.

However you could easily spot the geniune people who was showing a big distaste on him (asmongold) cause of their (in)correctly interpretation of his character when it's really his chat that's the issue (and we have a TOS to protect against that type of neckbeard toxicity) so I never understood the hatered and toxicity displayed in that thread. But that's just me.

Its where the money his business is making is to be made, so its not a surprise if this were the case. However as a player away from streaming as his persona of Asmongold he may stick with it and love the hell out of it.

However, it sounds like from all comments i read from him and hearing his stance on podcasts - It seems to me he wants to give it a fair shot so I hope he can plow through ARR without throwing in the towel.
