You'll be seriously missing out on entire huge storylines in WoW if you don't pony up the cash and buy books that could've and should've been in the game you pay 60 bucks for plus 15 every month not including each expac.
I also feel like when you get lore through FFXIV game play, you're 100% getting it from your characters point of view a lot too - not always but still.
Still, what you miss in FFXIV is no where near what you miss in WoW. Like, look. I love both games, I'm not stomping on either of them. I love the lore for both. But WoW 100% has a problem with not putting much thought into the lore that goes into gameplay vs what you have to seek out books to learn. I'm not against reading, just I don't see why this can't be included in the game too. FFXIV does it - there's a skip feature for people who don't want to watch, yanno?

Good news! We have those things in FF14~

There are some official light novels like this one (it's a good read, half of if is a novelization of part of the game and half is new shirt stories. I don't really get why but it's become trendy for light novels to do this.)

But also the lodestone occasionally updates with short stories explicitly made to explore the story/backstory/lore. Here's one of my faves, and through this link you should be able to find the others:

See you get it. I have a friend who does nothing but bash XIV because "WoW has so much lore" But he had to spend 100s of bucks to get it. Meanwhile I'm getting all I can ask for and more just playing on my baby PS4 pro in XIV.

:c I'm sorry your friend bashes XIV. That's not cool.

I play both games, but I also have friends who like to bash the games (WoW players who bash XIV, XIV players who bash WoW on both sides q.q It's awful.) whenever I log out to go do something on another one q.q

XIV is amazing, though. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about loving it. <3

Does he have to? Can he not just look for scans or wiki articles about said lore?

Yeah the lodestone short stories are entertaining, not a huge fan of light novels but I will look into them. Maybe they will release a book series.

Same. I haven't read a book since like 2009, and I don't know why anyone would want to buy one! I suppose they'd be nice decorations, but then again, I don't really decorate my house or room.

In it's core both games are good, thats why they are successful and still going strong, it's just that WoW is currently in a situation where people are not happy with certain decisions hence all those creators jumping ship to FFXIV because they don't want to deal with the daily grind requirements and randomness.
Kinda sad that alot of WoW players are not used to actual good story telling in the game, so much that they think story skip and boosting is the way to get to the fun parts of the game because no one likes leveling.

Speaking as a WoW player as well - it's NOT that I think story skip and boosting is the way to go. I 100% HATE boosting half the time and almost NEVER do in WoW. My issue has never been with the story with FFXIV, but rather the questing. The tedious grind of the questing to me, feels no different than the grind aspects in WoW - which I also can't stand.

I think because the quests in FFXIV are so back and forthy, that's my issue.

But I also maintain everyone finds something different in this game that's fun and for some, the story might just not be important. That's okay. One of my friends literally just lives in the Gold Saucer doing the races and triple triad, lol and she has a blast. I've mentioned I enjoy dungeons, potd, GS, farming, etc. Honestly I could literally just do that and be happy - though I did find shadowbringers questing a little better than the last few expansions.
