but I want to talk about someone on Twitter.

This guy I had a discussion with literally said he was going to go out of his way to harras this streamer and if he got banned he was just going to make alts so he can keep doing it over and over again just to make his experience worse.

He said his reasoning for wanting to do that was because he hates him for several reasons including the reason that hes a wow player and that somehow makes him his "enemy".

This is part of the OP on this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comme..._unacceptable/

Glad to hear he had fun and is eager to play again tomorrow. I hope some day he gets to meet that "Lisa Lomasa" lady, she sounds important!

I want to say a few things about the giant mob of elephants in the room:

    1) In retrospect, I'm not convinced all the players crowding his server and following him around today were necessarily all doing it to stop him from playing or make him feel unwelcome. I think they wanted the exact opposite. They are fans of his who were excited to see him come to this game, and perhaps went about it in a cringey and thoughtless way, but fans nonetheless. Did we see some high-level FFXIV characters present in the crowd? Yes, but that is in no way a contradiction in terms. I'm sure Asmon has plenty of fans in the FFXIV community -- heck, the dude who made this thread seems to be madly in love with him.

It's possible that some of them were bad actors, but if that's the case they sure did a bad job of trying to disrupt him. For the brief bit that I managed to see on Twitch early on, it was mostly people just floating around on their fancy mounts watching him. Asmongold actually got some of his needed quest kills without issue. If there were really a serious, large-scale effort to sabotage him, they sure were disorganized. How did they let him get to Sastasha and beyond? SLOPPY!

    2) Can we use this incident to say anything, one way or the other, about the Final Fantasy XIV community? Serious question: how many people were actually there following Asmongold around today? Anyone here have some hard numbers? Well, I can tell you I wasn't there. It sounds like a lot of you in this thread weren't there either. I logged into the game on my own server today, I saw lots of people online who were obviously going about their own business and not trolling Asmongold. So, it was less than 100% of FFXIV players, at least.

Can we make an estimated guess? Probably not, but for the sake of argument let's assume the absolute worst-case scenario, just to satisfy the "GCBTW" crowd who can't seem to get enough of reminding us how "toxic" FFXIV players are compared to other games. I googled "FFXIV server population" and got this site: https://www.gamepur.com/guides/final...er-populations

These numbers could be inaccurate, but just hear me out and see where this is going. Asmongold played on Cactuar I think, right? Let's just assume that every single player on the entire Cactuar server is an evil, Asmongold-hating monster and every last one of them was online today just to mess with him and make him want to leave. And even though the entire population of the server couldn't possibly even fit in the same maps as him, let's just say they magically found a way. Compare Cactuar to the general population of just all the North American servers and we get less than 3% of FFXIV players (and I rounded each server down to the nearest 1000 in every case, just to further give nefarious Cactuar players further bloated representation). Again, that's excluding any Japanese and European servers.

So, let's go with 3%. 3% were bad people doing bad things today. Can we use a percentage that small that to say anything about "the FFXIV community" as a generality? I don't think that makes much sense, myself.

Yeah it's clearly not true and I think some people are really exaggerating the amount of players that were deliberately trying to screw him over.
When I was watching most were just watching him or doing emotes clearly meant to cheer him on.
There were a few individuals who were actively trying to screw him over but most very clearly weren't.

Also I just don't take this argument seriously anymore that people are '' too defensive '' and toxic.
Sure there are some people who are toxic and get extremely defensive for minor criticism I am not going to say that there aren't, but when I look through Twitter and other forums the same people saying that generally instigated something and people are responding to blatant misinformation or people who are clearly only interested in slandering.
Correcting someone who clearly haven't played the game who is just saying things that are wrong is not being '' overly defensive '', and I also don't think that it's '' overly defensive '' to take issue with people who just go on big rants about '' weeb game '' etc.
Like why is this some one-sided thing where only the people '' defending '' the game are in the wrong, but the people who just lie about the game or rant about how the game sucks because it's '' weeb '' are supposedly not in the wrong?
The latter are the ones instigating it, I don't see the issue with people responding to that.

It's like if someone calls you a homophobic slur and you tell them to go f themselves and then people act like you're in the wrong.
Or if someone says that 4 +4 = 9 and you correct them.
Like what exactly is the logic there?

Same with people complaining about others being positive about the game and wanting to recommend it to others.
It's like with censorship and people who mock others for being mad about it, these same people only do that because it's content they don't care about personally being censored.
If it was content they cared about they'd get mad about it too.
I mean people were evangelizing Classic WoW like crazy and had their nostalgia hats on too, and people have been with WoW for years.

And then you look at the post history of people both here, on other forums and social media who are complaining about this and it's all just negativity about FFXIV.

A lot of the people who were blocking him, and also a lot of the people with the savage ultimate weapons, left after he filed a report. Nothing happened from that report, and Asmon knew nothing would happen from the report, but his chat wanted him to submit it and most of the griefers left soon after

I'm just going to go with what happened today was a mix of people being stupid about a "celebrity" streaming his experience (the "HI MOM I'M ON TV!" crowd) , People in his community being on-brand for the type of "jokes' he himself says they find funny (messing with asmond in every way possible), People who genuinely don't want him or his community here (They must exist, they exist for every game. Gatekeeping is a thing), and People who just wanted to be a part of it in some way (possibly positively).

Using this experience as a "GCBTW" is extremely disingenuous. Dudes a high profile streamer with following that his character cultivates as "just having fun" pranksters. This is not the average experience for playing FF and shouldn't be considered representative of anything but how hard it is to have a normal experience once you're "famous".

Yeah that's also why I think GM's should physically make their presence known, they don't even need to stick around constantly during his whole stream but just check in sometimes.
If they'd do that then I think people would get scared because it'd always be at the back of their minds that a GM could see it.

I don't think they should ban anyone tho unless they make it very clear that they're only doing it to screw with him some are probably just doing it because they think they're helping and legit don't understand how annoying they're being.

I wonder how many people actually have watched his streams before- because him having an army around him is pretty much the norm in WoW. From what I saw, today looked pretty tame compared to his average day.

He has some really dedicated crazy people though- I can't say names, but there's a few stream snipers that spent months doing basically everything you saw today, and worse, when he played Classic. Expect to see the same when he gives Ashes and New World a try, except since those have FFA pvp they won't be sitting on his quest givers, just camping endlessly.

sorry, I meant ultimate weapons (which should've been obvious in the first place but you just had to use that as an attack didn't ya ) - and I'm not blaming raiders, I'm "blaming" the oh so nice and welcoming non-toxic community that showed it's face earlier
of course it's not everyone, but it showed that he definitively lives rent free in the head of quite a lot of people who wanted to ruin his fun

That's not a bubble popping. 20+ million (and counting) registered accounts, but not that many active concurrent players. This has been going on for a long time as it's just the nature of a long-running game. WoW, for example, had 100+ million accounts (and counting) at one point, but probably not that many concurrent players either.

Yep, it's largely a celebrity effect.

Let's not forget that he told his fans to harass people who bought store mounts or cosmetics.
