People don't talk because the game is incredibly anti social in so many ways.

You can start with the button spam combat system that never really grants a moment to type a sentence or make a social connection. Because of your typing your either falling behind or not doing your job.

But even if you could chat you cant sendnir receive tells in duties anyway so building social connections there is also a nono.

Then there's the msq itself and it's arbitrary forcing you to be a Billy no mates. You cannot progress because your in a party with friends. Even if there all a the exact same point in the msq.

You cant help your friends either in some cases like Savage because of you do you'll gimp there rewards so again anti social there.

There's also group sizes everyrhibgbis strictly 4 8 24 man so if you have 6 7 10 people that all want to do something people are inevitably going to get left out or excluded or noone does anything because the 7 people that want to play together now need an 8th pug which will interfere with any loot plans they may have..

All if this leads to social connections and "friends" often being incredibly shallow and superficial... not to unlike Facebook where someone thinks there popular because they have 1000 friends... yet never has meaningfull interactions with any of them and still feels.lonely and depressed because none of those 1000 friends are real..

Oh and duty finder. So you got a duty with 3 or 7 other players.. chances are once the duty is complete you'll never get matched with them again and if you do it'll be so long ago you forgot them..

All of which play big parts in why people dont communicate and the social interaction in Xiv is so superficial

It sounds like you are just bitter you haven't been able to make friends in this game the way you want to.


I have several I've been playing with for.... About 7 years now. And we've gotten together irl for events and stuff. They are proba ly the best friends I have, and are almost like family. I know I'm not the o ly one with that experience too.


The game just doesn't force you to be social. So you have to put effort into it.

That's not necessary true. Many player I know either left, split between servers or only connect for main patches. The atmosphere of the game has changed a lot since ARR.

There are many FC that struggle to stabilize (dramas, hiatus, one-month-patch-rushers etc.) and there are some that hesitate to recruit once stablized.

Then excuse me for looking at the bigger picture. Most NN are a glorified exclusive chat, where there are mentors abusing kicks, and many giving bad advice. It is a dated system, and should be removed from the game, in my opinion. A new player is better off looking elsewhere for information.

Which other places? "Dead" forums? Herd mind sub reddit. Dusty clunky info fan websites?
NN gives everyone a chance for quick player driven live chat help. Sure there are bad info there as well but many often quickly correct it. At least on my experience.

Also having an active chat which is server wide imo is a great thing. Bringing up that MMO feeling.

Perhaps not new ones but I've said manytimes my circle of frineds is a group of people some of which were in my old ffxi linkshell,some i met during 1.0. so some of these friends and connections go back almost 20 years. we've been to weddings, funerals, holidays together. 36 of us one new years party. and as I've said hundred of times. its those connections that often keep us playing. not the game itself. the game itself honestly isnt that good but good friends make it much enjoyable. often referred to xivas a cheap restaurant. crap food crap service, but with goodpeople can still have a great night..

In all those years though i cannot tell you how many people ive seen come and go and the social experience is often a big factor for why many new players don't stick around very long, because the social interactionis so shallow and makes it difficult for new players to make connections which is why so many drop the game.

this is because all those connections are supershallow a lot of fc leaders especially on some of the bigger fcs that welcome new players will tell you the same thing..most new players just don't stick around very long. there was a topic on here not so long ago where they were discussing kickingnew players because so many of them play for 2-3 months andthen you never see them again and the fc list ends up saying 250+days since they last logged in...

XIVs community isvery selfcentred and not group centred. which is also why theres so many complaints about things like statics forever falling apart or even just needing a static to do content these days because of how selfish people killed the raidfinder off. it's all very shallow and superficial...

but going back to the making friends thing. to be honest making new ones would only cause problems because of things i said in my earlier post... it just causes drama when people cant be included in things.. like way back when we wanted to potd floor 200. 6 of us wanted to do it..... but we could only take 4... so yeah that was fun and drama... we did do a few different groups based on peoples play times but yeah.

its one reason why i honestly dont recommend the game to friends unless they're literally only interested in the story.. if they wanna partake in the group stuf and hang out then its just going to make stuff even more awkward.. its a similar reason to why many fcs just dont recruit. becausemore people just makes things awkward. which is why many people still want to see actual FC based content that everyone can take part in.

I am a member of one FC... The first one that asked me, I must be very easy xD, but it is overpopulated I feel like I need sth smaller or that suits me better, now that I am more used to the game.

Let me guess, the same one that keeps inviting me? Lol. Spriggan Raiders something or other keeps inviting me randomly. I'll find a FC someday. No chat is boring.

Welcome to the game! Duties really aren't the place that conversations will get started, since everyone is busy doing their rotations and progressing through the instance. So taking time to talk could mean you eat a mechanic or don't heal someone. Sometimes there are the rare chatty groups (especially if someone says they're playing drunk, those are a hoot) but it's not common.

You will find the social aspect more in a good FC, linkshell, or just by talking in chat in cities.

Frankly, anywhere is better than the NN.

I'm just gonna be real here, but everytime I have seen active chat on FFXIV, I cringe. The banter I've seen people get up to is... odd.. to say the least. I just stick to Discord for that, for the most part.

As someone who basically played this game solo for the first year I understand it gets lonely, this is mainly due to not having a true world chat.

Also I won't be talking to you in-game(get discord) because talking to you is a possible permanent risk against my account.

Good luck out there, once you find the right fc it gets a lot better.
