It's likely grown because people have found they can make gil off of it. So I wonder how much of it helps fuel RMT.

To be fair, I wasn't aware of how big some of this was until some of these threads. I tended to think this is minority stuff. So I expect the scale is probably a more recent phenomenon if people were surprised 2 years ago or thought of it as a small or a non issue.

Maybe it's because I have 0 faith in people, but the only reason it got to this is because there are non RPers who legit wanted to take advantage of the same people they probably make fun of behind the screens, to make easy gil.

This is my take just from hearing in my own time in game that people were planning to open venues strictly to mane gil off ERP. It's always sort of left a bad taste in my mouth. It's half profiting off a community you don't enjoy or partake in normally and half making it harder for legit RPers to separate from the ERP stigma that that's all they're after.
