Mentor system needs an overhaul

Look, I was agreeing with everything you were saying. (most) Mentors are indeed random players that use the crown for looks.

But when you listed your proposed overhaul I couldn't help but laugh-- this is a bit extreme isn't it? I mean, how relics and fates will help anyone know more about the game?

Playing through low content forces players to remember and understand specific mechanics that can benefit sprouts. Yes, they are extreme, but being a Mentor should be earned with effort, rather than some commendations and role quests. Overall the current system is absurd.

While mentors should definitly have strong knowledge about the game, don't expect them to be wiki-ffxiv either. They're human, not living encyclopedia.

As for the relic requirement you mention, I don't know what's challenging about it.
It takes time. Especially ARR one. Nothing particulary hard to do.
Or maybe being patient nowaday became challenging I imagine.

Being challenging is not the point. Sometimes people work on relic weapons and have questions about them in the novice network. A mentor probably can't answer them if they've never done one.

I don't think the majority of sprouts will work on them, but occasionally they delay the MSQ to do them. Returners could be at any stage of the game as well and frequently they are doing the ShB relic.

Trade mentor is rather fake, the requirements are so low that you can sleepwalk your way to collectables. The majority are not even giving any trade advice, anywhere, and because the content where it even mattered has past us for months. Usually you don't take much stock in anyone with a hammer crown.


Now commendations are important to the system, that's why it was raised heavily. You don't want people who just don't get along with others, or stink at the game in-general. You know why people comm others even if they don't say anything. Like they do good DPS, or know their job and content to a high-level. That's important, you want people whom others approve of.

I don't speak in-content over 90% of the time, yet I've broken over 5000 in commendations over the years. From all types of content.

I think that commendations should play a part, but I don't think they are an accurate gauge of how helpful a player can be. A lot of the time I'm rushing just to hand one out because people leave so fast, usually not even throwing a commendation at someone themselves, so it's basically like "Uh...yeah, that person. Here's a commendation I guess!"
