The FF14 community doesn't know what it's got lol. Among MMOs outside of the community, FFXIV is seen as a group of generally nice folks..

This, ff14 is the only big mmo that I ve seen that has a positive and friendly community, and that is because they actually care about enforcing their ToS and hire gms.
And no, nobody implied people are saints here, we are saying it is a positive community because square Enix knows the only way to stop the average western gamer from being toxic, throwing slurs around and other disgusting things we see in most western mmo global chats is to hold a ‘gun’ to their head so they behave and if that is the only way for the western gamer to behave I think it is a good thing

If this forum had a similar 'dislike' or 'downvote' feature, make no mistake tons of threads (and posts) would appear the same way.

The dislike functioning has been removed years ago, this is people literally abusing the report function by reporting anything they don’t like

Y'all hang around in the forums way too much if you think it's otherwise - my positive experiences here have more than triumphed over my negative experiences. And those arent even neutral-positive experiences, those are positive experiences - times where I didn't quite understand a mechanic in a level 50 dungeon and a fellow sprout helped me, the times where I've shouted or asked my FC or NN chat to shoot me a rez (some people going WAY out of their way to rez me) and they do so without hesitation, my first day roaming around and getting a random trade of 100k gil (which at the time, was INSANE to me, I'd been at 3k at the time). These are just cherry picked from my repertoire of awesome, amazing experiences I've had in this community.

On the flip side, my boyfriend and his mother have told me nothing but horror stories about the WoW community (And my friend about Everquest2, but I suppose the community there is about as dark as the game itself looks). And this isn't an isolated thing either! The amount of people I've seen complaining about the FFXIV community pales in comparison to the amount of people I've seen complaining about the WoW community from WITHIN the WoW community.

Oh yeah, it is definitely one of the nicer communities to deal with. I'd just be hesitant to put it up on a pedestal because I've seen things.

Oh definitely, I've seen some stuff even here on the forums. But even at that, the forum trolls here aren't nearly as horrible as the entirely serious players among other MMOs. Heck, even the thread on the front page of general right now, the one about the harassment in NN, it's one guy doing the griefing. I think Ralph was spot on in his assessment - SE knows that the only way to foster a pleasant-to-be-in community is to ensure that every little threat to that view is rectified, with a stricter-than-average attention paid to infractions against ToS, and a ToS that is vaguely worded enough that they can exercise discretion, but also specific enough that the general majority of the playerbase will never see the need to break a rule.

Speaking of personal experience here, yes we can argue that the bad stuff happening here isn't as common as in other places. This still kinda is based on what is defined as toxic, since people have different levels (some... very interesting levels.)

However, I still can't exactly forget those few months where a group of players publicly verbally harassed me with very VERY strong words (r***** is one example). Something that went so hard so long I actively had to go play WoW for a while because even that community never went that far with me after 10+ years.

Oh, did I forget to mention despite multiple reports, Square didn't even so much as smack them? That 3 month end mark only technically was an end mark because I stopped logging into public spaces for them to find me online. And you'd think with 3 months of this in a PUBLIC CHAT CHANNEL they'd have done even 1 slap at them.

Then again people wonder why I don't trust the gm team. The only thing it had over WoW's was that, as of at the moment, WoW doesn't have a GM team because Activision fired them all.

Sorry to hear that happened to you. I'm not really shocked that the GM team didn't do anything regarding it because they have a pretty open stance regarding personal disputes, hence why even when you remove someone from your friends list it doesn't remove you from the other person's. They're more concerned with keeping the other person (the offender) happy too than protecting victims as a whole. I've heard people attribute it to a cultural difference and the mindset of people in Japan but still doesn't make it okay.

Which also happens here, all the time actually. At least a report doesn't hide posts like that.

As another poster mentioned I have heard some horror stories regarding the WoW community but when you dig deep into their story often times they are were slightly at fault just like the horror stories in FFXIV. Sure you may run into the few people that may genuinely attack someone for no reason at all, and it may happen more often in WoW due the sheer player size and nature of the game (open world pvp, chat in arena etc . . .) but at the more they are roughly the same community.

Generally when people tell me their horror stories I always ask what did they do to provoke such a response. As I said not impossible but generally some reason why someone lashes out and it could be something as simple as being a lalafell or a gnome. People generally have their reasons to lash out may not make sense or be valid but rarely do people target someone for no reason at all.

In short peeps need to learn to not take shit so personally that whole thick skin mentally plays here. Simply not worth getting worked up over every negative comment aimed towards you.

I do think SE should do more in regards to ERP.

I remember in wow how mostly young teenagers would pretend things in gold shire. They were likely both male and it was stupid and a bit offensive if you were there, but it wasn’t really a big issue or harmful.

But here it’s a lot more sinister. A lot more kinks and I have no doubt that kids could potentially be in danger here.

You can’t really control what two people write in messages to each other but they should absolutely be addressing the community finder posts that are popping up. This is a family friendly game.

We need Section 3.3 to unite us under his banner to combat these illegal RPer's.
