I rather talk then text, I can talk and still play at my best. I hardly reply to text when I'm doing stuff cause I play on PS4 and typing on controller sucks. Sorry.

This changes from fc to fc. My own fc is ultra active in disc and it's far from the only one I know of that is like this. But I know of just as many who are super quiet.I have been in several FC's that advertise discord but no one seems to just hang out and talk unless there is a specific need like dungeons. This is the first mmo that I have played that people just seem adverse to talking and getting to know one another while playing. Without people to talk with and get to know, I feel like I am just playing solo and the FC is only there for the buffs, but no community.
Former Evercracker as well. Big reason I don't do Savage in this game. I like my time to be my own.Because I don't play games to chit chat, and if I'm in a mood to do so, Discord is the most obnoxious place to do it.
Edited Note: It's a sad thing that you consider an FC as people to talk with, rather than play with. It's sad, because in my experience with FF14, you're probably right.
But I've been playing MMO's since Everquest was in beta, when no voice chat even existed, and so know what a good guild is really about.
Voice chat is not required.
The only thing I can really give Discord over in-game tools is being able to leave notes for people who aren't online about events. We used to do that in my old EQ guild with our website. But yeah, I use Discord for non-FFXIV stuff, but FC chat works just fine for me.
Speaking in voice prevents immersion in any kind of game.I have been in several FC's that advertise discord but no one seems to just hang out and talk unless there is a specific need like dungeons. Even in a dungeon, I don't need it.
OK, voice helps to create a sense of community, but it also works in text, as long as the person is used to writing on a keyboard.
I prefer to live my favourite game immersed in quests and cinematics, if I was always connected at discord we always know unconsciously that someone is going to talk to us.
The other problem is that Discord oriented FC will also unwittingly exclude anyone who does not like to hang out on Discord from the FC atmosphere.
There are a lot of FC that works without speech except for raid savage. And it works very well without it.
1. Game music and people with a quiet mic or a strong accent are not compatible. And the music is very good.
2. Focusing on playing the game. I use push to talk so it's one extra button press in the middle of my rotation.
3. I'm not good at small talk, although I don't mind listening to it.
4. Other people may have different pacing in a conversation and they may expect you to just interrupt with a comment, whereas I like to wait for a silent moment to say anything (it never comes). Text is just easier.
5. My mic gets in the way of eating and drinking.
Voice chat is ok when you've specifically got together to do something and have fun, talk about strategy and have someone do callouts. I wouldn't want to use it during my daily play sessions, though.
Privacy. Thats why.
Perfectly said. Our FC is a little unusual as it's specifically for people with Social Anxiety. We do have Discord but use it mainly to keep in touch outside the game, voice is just for call-outs on higher end duties.
Anxiety is definitely one reason why people don't use voice. We're happy not to use voice for general chat as it means nobody gets left out of the conversation. Female players often avoid voice because they don't want to be harassed or treated differently because they are female and sadly, that still happens quite often.
I think it's a good idea to ask about voice when you are considering joining a FC, some use it a lot, others like us don't. There isn't a right or wrong here, you just have to find a group that works in a way you're comfortable with.
I'm female, and once that becomes apparent from voice, I get treated a lot differently. Some good, some bad, but definitely different.
I agree. I played Everquest. Raided without a mic and voice chat. It was a much more enjoyable and rewarding experience killing 15 raid bosses after a server reset.Because I don't play games to chit chat, and if I'm in a mood to do so, Discord is the most obnoxious place to do it.

I dunno people have been asking that lately about why only 10-20 students out of 300 have their cam on or talk on mic. It seems quite common to be adverse when it's not just people that already opt-in to it.
