I can't remember which Developer said this, but there was something along the lines of keep Familiarity for the players.

Which I don't agree half the time with that statement.

I actually dredge if the side-quests in the next expansion is going to be the same thing.

Well, with so many dungeons, it can be hard to keep track of every single one. But I fail to understand why it should mean "repeat the same thing over and over".

    Good one. =)

There is also no category of additional bosses that can be "summoned" by performing certain actions and which can be killed or not killed by choice.

Bonus bosses! Additional reward for some sidework never hurt anybody and always welcomed.

I like that personally but with the existing lack of consensus on basic dungeon things like the size of pulls I wonder if this would just breed more contention?

I guess how would an optional bonus boss breed contention? I mean if the rewards or a chance at some sort of reward (provided they were worth the effort) may swings thing in favor. I guess (SE) could treat a bonus boss as as a wanted NPC. NOt always there kinda of like along the lines of a wanted target you get from levels. AS for rewards, I mean the game hands out tomes like they are candy, maybe tie in some gil that scales basedon the expansion the dungeon takes place in or what not? Also could tie a bonus in the reward for doing in roulette...not sure so it would it couldn't be done out of roulette.

Increasing randomness of mechanics and optional methods of doing things doesn't work well in a game where most parties are formed from random players whether it's the random matchmaking in Duty Finder or the still somewhat random matching through Party Finder. The player community eventually comes up with a "most efficient" method that everyone is expected to know and adhere to. Few are willing to waste more than the minimum time necessary to clear the content. They've got other things they want to be doing. They don't want to deal with the drama that occurs when people start arguing over how to do something.

As for fights being scripted, they're all scripted. The boss can't make up stuff on it's own. There's always some timer or HP% or other factor that's triggering a boss's use of mechanics. Even if the mechanic picked isn't necessarily the same each time, it's still going to come from a limited selection of possible mechanics because all of it needs to be programmed to make certain the encounter doesn't bug out.

If you don't want to get bored so fast, then join a static where everyone agrees to do blind prog. It's a lot more interesting when you're trying to figure out what's happening and what the group should instead of following a guide posted by someone who's already cleared the content.

Optional bosses inevitably get ignored when most groups are formed through random matchmaking.

Player A doesn't want to waste time on the optional boss, they're just there for the roulette bonus.

Player B already got whatever reward the optional boss drops. It's a waste of their time because there's nothing in it for them.

Player C would like to do it but can't get anyone to agree because Player D has tuned out party chat while they're watching Netflix.

They're nothing more than a source of drama and no one wants to waste time on drama.

Kind of reminds me of Kirin on FFXI. Linkshells would bring enough people to make multiple alliances for adds and to rotate BLMs (cause for years the NA players felt like all end game problems could only be solved by throwing BLM's at them) and as a result it would take over an hour for 1 kill.

Then those linkshells would see small LS'es like mine show up with 1 alliance at most and just TP burn Kirin down so fast it wouldn't get a chance to summon more than 1 or 2 of it's 4 adds and they'd lose their minds...

But then alot of them were also people that annoyed me in game claiming that because they posted on some website I never heard of that they supposedly had claim on every NM in sky and cried endlessly when they found out I'd solo killed just about every NM up there before they showed up...
