I think an interesting idea would be to give out 'bald' character reference images for contestants to draw on top of, that way one could take a better judgment over the actual hair without artstyle bias involved /shrug

I assume that's what they did, seeing how many entries are based on the same character model template.
They were very liberal with the rules though, so people could take pictures of themselves or draw fully original pictures or alter a screen shot of their character or w/e.
IMO I think that if they do another contest they should simply decide the winners ... just like they do with the other recent contest.
These entries show a lot of variety and their taste as designers has been proven time and time again. I'd have no problem with them looking at 100s of entries and picking 15-20 to do themselves and posting the winners so we can see what to expect.
Not gonna pretend that SE is uber progressive by any means, but if these 3 hairstyles that they saw as interesting and worthy of putting in the game had actually gotten in as unisex options that would have gone a long way towards making some of us feel more included over 10 flavors of sleepy-anime-protag-bed-head.

Crazy how that 3rd one you linked, the braided one, didn't make it, but the other 3 braided hairstyles did.I assume that's what they did, seeing how many entries are based on the same character model template.

Not crazy at all, this fanbase has wimpy weeby taste.
Shockingly most of the winners were from the MALE entries ... because the grand prize 1st place female entry and next in line just seemingly ate up so many of the female votes. The gap in female winner votes is strikingly high, seems like people just voted for the prettiest drawings with the cutest hair styles and left it like that ... leading to a situation where male hair styles have a more even gap and they get 7 winners compared to the female 5. Guess people just really love that side ponytail.
It's really no shock that the pretties drawings with the cute waifu/ anime boi styles or FF ref materiel (Legend) got the most votes.
This is why I say the devs should just pick like they do with the gear design contest. If they don't the players are bound to do the same thing again and wonder why in 3 years we still get nothing but girlish short styles and anime protag hair. Gear is as diverse as you can ask, hair is a much more precious thing with far fewer options ... the thought of community vote is pretty and all but there's no guarantee that those who decide to vote will vote for what's in the best interest of those with next to no options.

Most likely that's how it well be next time, if there were ever to be one. I personally have no hope.
Btw, did you notice that two of the runner-ups were from the same guy? And both made it into the game? Kinda bullshit don't you think?

Oh, I didn’t even notice that since I don’t read Japanese, but are all the winners Japanese since all their nicknames were written that way? Was it Japan only? I don’t remember.

The contest was not exclusive to Japan, because among the entries there were non-Japanese people who submitted pictures of themselves and their hairstyle. The nicknames were in Japanese because it was the Japanese devs that organized the thing. Dunno if all the winners were Japanese but 5 of em are for sure.

I don't know who made what but if it's in the game it's only because of the voting by players.
As for the ones that didn't get in it seems clear to me that who ever made the black looking hair style for dudes also submitted the black looking hair style for females seeing as it's so close in art style and theme. I don't think they name anyone though and just give the styles nick-names.
