I'm not saying Chemist/Apothecary can't or won't happen but I also wouldn't take that line as 'teasing' a new job just as I wouldn't take the new dungeon bosses as 'teases' for necromancer/berserker etc.

nah this is FFXIV. You're going to get your one damage spell, your one DoT, your cure clone and a cure 2 clone and a regen/shield and you're gonna like it.From those, we can already see a few ways that Chemist can work in FFXIV as a healer. Wielding a special gun that could shoot alchemical effects, giving it a long range weapon for using its skills. Mix would allow it a Mudra-ish system allowing for multiple interesting buffs and heals to be created depending on the mixture.
Its not so much that one line (though that line does help reenforce it) as it is that entire story. Theres far more set up and time spent on it than was really needed if it were just going to be a throwaway thing.

While I know this is FFXIV... and were more than likely going to get a clone of an existing healer with some tiny bits of Chemist flavour thrown in... Id very much like to see it as a ranged physical healer, with a rifle that can throw potions or use a special healing-gun to heal people.
Just let me role play as the Plague Doctor from Darkest Dungeon!
What else are they going to give us as a healer from the staple Final Fantasy classes??
If this was setting up Chemist or something similar, then why do it on the First? While it's 'possible' we'd get a new job tied to the First, new jobs tend to be tied to new areas in the expansions, with the exception of SHB because it's set on another world so they drew from things back on the Source rather than tie new job lore to Norvrandt. Its not so much that one line (though that line does help reenforce it) as it is that entire story. So any apothecary/chemist lore...would be entirely separate from this kid we talked to. I think the point of the kid wasn't to foreshadow a job so much as to just show someone else inspired to be a hero in their own way, tying into things thematically with the patch.
Spoiler for 5.3 msq.
Basically, Elidibus draws his strength from people inspired to be heroes in order to become the 'Warrior of Light' and this is providing an example of someone like that at the start of the 5.3 msq. That makes more sense to me for why it's there as opposed to them setting up a job that will probably have its roots back on the Source rather than Norvrandt if added.
Out of all the jobs that have been seen in the FF series they could still use:
- Oracle
- Devout
- Sage
- Geomancer
- Songstress (Only because FF14 lacks a dedicated support role. Though you could make a case for it being another Ranged DPS like Dancer.)
- Chemist/Salve Maker
- And if they REALLY want to be trolls they could pull from Bravely Default's Merchant class because it does have healing mechanics. (IT HAS A SKILL CALLED BIG PHARMA)
There's a few others that can also heal (I'd die of laughter if they gave us Mime as a healer) and a few of these overlap with existing classes. Due to the overlap Chemist and Geomancer are the most likely, though Geomancer currently has a lore overlap with Astrologian in 14.
