I think the second Nier was a massively overrated game - it had just passable gameplay, and a downright boring story. The only reason I do those raids is the stupid legs.

to each their own, it was massively underrated where i´m from and i loved the story and the music. though i will admit it started to gets repeatedly trying to get those endings
But i do hope the nier plot picks up steam. The raid was fun but the story was little weak in the first part. lets hope they don't switch it around for the second part it would be so like Yoko Taro to do just that
They literally aren't though. At their core, they're both the same question.
You can only answer the question of future raids based on your feelings of the current. If the first installment isn't satisfying, then that leads to not believing the second will be; if a person is unsatisfied by the second, then they will be wary of the third.
One can enjoy the raid for any number of reasons (aesthetics, fun fights, etc.) and none of those necessarily mean they feel the raid is going in a very Nier direction.
Just see the poster below you.
You are not being specific enough and I don't see what your issue is. Is it the tech? Because people have complained about the tech. before. You got Ruby Weapon, The Twinning and the fact that Omega breaks time and space. Automata's technology is leagues behind XIV.Mix into FF14 lore? No, and imo, it shouldn't. Nier has redonkulous lore both in scope and scale. I really wouldn't want to deal with the implications it would bring to 14. Having this incident be a more or less secluded one is ideal.
I am more or less certain the story will be fine, and impactful in some way on the Nier lore. I also expect more Nier-ish raid mechanics and red balls, which I like.
Something I hope for, but doubt we'll get is a crushing existential crisis, with a side dish of Yoko Taro flavoured depression. Guess I can keep hoping though.
Implications? Ok. Dragons are aliens has been absolutely confirmed. Automata happened because of [drum roll] aliens! As did Drakengard matter of fact, otherwise the world would just be Lakeland.
Voidsent can travel between the rift. As can Omega, and Feo Ul. There is a Drakengard character that does this in her own way. I don't see how it doesn't work.
Maybe become an Automata fan by playing it.I don't know if I have faith. The story in the first raid was quite simple and I personally didn't find much interest in it. I guess Automata fans were happy to see their beloved characters, but to me none of them did anything outstanding (they just... fought). So I don't know what to expect for the next one. I'm just eager to see the new equipment, hahaha.
And keep playing because it does not end after you hit the credits as most game journalists think it does.
Specifically I was thinking time-frame, world wiping events and mechanics, diseases, its own magic system, and a multiverse that far exceeds our current established one in scale etc. There is also a tonal difference that's hard to work in without cheapening either Niers or our message / story. My wording was vague, because specifics aren't that important in this case. My issue is more with scale, themes, and story tones. You are not being specific enough and I don't see what your issue is. Personally, difference in tech level disturbs me the least, although I would argue that in many ways Nier far exceeds Allagan technology. Allag had greater feats due to magic, and having a longer golden age of technology, while the world of Nier went straight to hell after Drakengard, with all new tech devoted to survival or revival.
If by tone you mean depression or mass murdering then try the DRK story if you haven't already. Ah, Angelus would be so proud.Specifically I was thinking time-frame, world wiping events and mechanics, diseases, its own magic system, and a multiverse that far exceeds our current established one in scale etc. There is also a tonal difference that's hard to work in without cheapening either Niers or our message / story. XIV mirrors the massive scale of realities via shards. I don't think it's been emphasized enough how big a shard is. We can only go to so many locations and those are downscaled for the sake of video games. See the Stormblood FMV vs Kugane actually in game.
Calamities are the world wiping events. The scale is better shown in DrakenNier but the intent is only slightly different. Kill all humans as opposed to killing off most of them. From the short story on lodestone of Cid and Nero during the calamity, it sounds to me like the actual start of Drakengard 1. Specifically from the manga stemmed from DoD3.
Phew.
Thinking about it for more than 5 seconds, it's a lot to take in. But I am the type of person to consume everything pertaining to DoD/NieR so I suppose it just makes sense to me because I can find things not in game to show it.
I played the DRK quest line, but don't quite remember it to be depressing...? Maybe its in the eye of the beholder. If by tone you mean depression or mass murdering then try the DRK story if you haven't already. Ah, Angelus would be so proud.

Shards, as far as we know are just different versions of the original planet split into 14 different versions. Right now, its not confirmed if Hydaelyn split the whole universe or just one planet... but I tend to think its the latter, as we've yet to see any multiples of alien entities (like Omega or the dragons) on other shards.
In Nier its kind of implied that each parallel ending is its own reality, and given that there is no explanation provided (as far as I know of?) I think of it as a proper multiverse (Automata ending D & E I think supports the theory?).
Calamities are... weird. They are set to be global disasters, many as world ending events, yet sentient life recovered 7 times already. The 7th was little more than a mild discomfort on the global scale. It's the reason why I still have my doubts about the message behind the Exarch and the 8th Calamity being bad enough to time travel instead of recover.
Nier on the other hand went balls deep withNier revels in its depressing nihilism / existentialism / absurdism. People still argue which.the one EK class event they had. Took a good thousand years for the last human to die, but they did, and only the broken remains of their creations lived on in a miserable cycle for a good 9000 years just before Automata. Optimism is in very short supply and usually measured in low, personal doses.
I love both franchises and stories, but the message and tone is quite different I think, and I'm not sure they mix particularly well.

Based on the reddit summary, I suspect it'll just be Nier dropped into FFXIV which is quite disappointing. I prefer when they incorporate the 24 mans story into the actual world ala Crystal Tower. But Copied Factory itself was fun at least.
"Stand in the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honor matters."
"The silence is your answer."
Mmm.... No, I don't believe so. I feel like the first of the three tiers didn't do much to make itself cohesive with the world of XIV, which is what in my opinion, the initial raid should try its hardest to accomplish: a reason for being how it is, where it is.
It's possible that it'll solidify itself a bit more in the second tier but who knows. At any rate, it has the distinct "advantage" of existing within a screwed up world so Idk how much there really is to gel with.
