Japan actually never took it seriously like other countries did until now with social distancing. Now Tokyo is a hotbed.

Which given that they have a population of 33-37 million for the Greater Tokyo Area and a population density of 12,296-16,121.8 per square mile depending upon which statistic one happens to be using is tremendously worrying. Some wards aren't that densely packed, but others are an infectious disease specialist's worst nightmare in terms of how closely packed people end up being with one another. SE is absolutely right to shut things down right now because things are going to get bad, quickly.
