Yeah, but the way FFXIV draws a hard line between pvp abilities and pve abilities would make it really hard to implement. Especially since the pvp stuff isn't based on gear to buff your damage etc. Which would mean either dealing with those ramifications in FFXIV's open world, or just making open world pvp use the pve skill sets that are not at all concerned with pvp balance, be int in 1v1 or group vs group. It would just be a disaster.

Open world PvP in FFXIV? LOL yeah right! For one it would take a ton of balancing and SE barely does that for proper PvP, and even if it was opt-in it would be dead within a month because nobody would opt-in.

Yeah. The one advantage it would have over WoW is that, being free for all and not faction based, they wouldn't have to unseccessfully try and bribe one side into joining it more, but it would still not go very well. Even if they tried it before the hard pvp/pvp split in FFXIV I think it would be hardly used.

Then another of my, guild mates leveled up a character of the same class and found that you could complete the entire 10 stages with a single skill usage...)
God yes I remember this lol. I found it quite easy on all 3 roles but my god the forums went nuts because over half the playerbase couldn't complete it. I quit wow shortly after this.

I'm now remembering the sheer fear I held for the Nerubian spell-casters when undergeared as a Frost tank, begging my party to let me get hit by the low-damage spells so that I could build Acclimation to survive the stronger hits, while gleefully eating the spells whole on Unholy, only to fearfully prod my way up the Uthgarde Pinnacle balcony pull on Unholy while full-pulling on Frost, fearing only the strongest individual hits. 3 viable DPS specs, with about 7 successful builds between them, atop 3 viable tank specs for various styles and content types, each with distinct advantages and weaknesses... What a time...

Perhaps the foremost error in game design, in a nutshell.

More diverse pvp modes, and smaller frontlines, to make PvP more fun. However, when I have suggested this in the past, I all I got was “No PvP in FF14! Waste of resources! WoW is toxic,WOW has pvp, this FF14 will get more toxic with more PvP modes!” So I guess it’s in the anathema category XD

Maybe people would be less toxic in FF14 PvP if PvP was more fun and enjoyable?

I like PvP too, but there's just no way it would work in this game without some massive overhauls. The games where open world PvP actually worked were designed around having it in the first place.

And generally didn't gut it down to a small fraction of the complexity of their PvE elements...

In general PvP seems to do best in games that do not build their PvE gameplay around a lack of intelligence. The more advanced their AIs, and the more enemies' abilities and capacities range as widely as your own, the better the game can support PvP since at that point you're fighting against your own intelligences and toolkits.
