One shot mechanics in Normal Raids

Okay, I wasn't thinking of it in those terms.

I think I was thinking in terms of "red portals vs blue portals", in which case there isn't a difference.

But it's also about how you perceive the portals working.

Now that you point it out, yes - the back portals are "in portals" and the sides are "out portals", at least for the purposes of this fight.

But I was thinking of it in terms that "what goes in one portal comes out the other", and they are a linked pair that perform the same function. We just only see it going one way because the birds only start from that one direction.

If they came from the side, they could go in the side portal and go out the back. We just don't see it happen.

I'm not saying I'm right and you're wrong for correcting me, but that's how I was perceiving it at the time and why I said they're the same.

I'd have to ask to OP, what was your iLvl when you were doing this raid ? Did you have any Vulnerability debuff stacks on when you took the damage ? Were you full health ?

Because in my case, i did it as iLvl 458 WHM, and i got hit by this attack a couple times, but it never was an instant death, even with Vulnerability 1~2 ... The only time my team wiped on E7 was when we weren't able to kill the adds in time and the boss enraged.
So i am surprised that you were one shot by it.

Actually of all 4 new Eden raids, i think E7 has to be my favorite so far (with E8). It has a couple mechanics that are really cool in my opinion. On the other hand, i thought E5 was way too easy, and E6 too messy to understand what is going on.

Also, i personally don't think "normal difficulty" should equal "first try clear". I am happy to find a bit of challenge even in normal mode.

Another advice i can give you is to not try new raids with randos on the CF right after they came out. Most people don't know how they work yet. Your experience would be more fun if you party up with people from your FC, for instance.

Only after the back portals receive them. Someone new to the fight and going in blind will not know this. I know you know that, but allow me to elaborate a bit. I will also have to correct you from a personal perspective, because I did not get this mechanic down until I fully understood how the portals work. The first couple of times I did the fight (or any fight), the concept of time becomes skewed, and I feel like I have less time than I actually do all the while trying to be mindful as a healer of everything else going on. Even if nothing else is going on other than the sequence of mechanics during this time, I am new to the fight or still learning and I still need to be made aware of this.

The fight does try to show you the portals mechanic in a safe way by first placing side portals only in the back two rows. However it's probably too much to ask players to pay attention to that on their first run.

For me I was able to see that birds are coming out of the side portals first from one color, then the other, but it wasn't until someone said the portals are linked that I realized how to see which one was first. But once I had that information it all clicked and I was able to piece together the unjoined aspect + portals mechanic on my own too. For unjoined aspect itself I actually read the debuff description and got it right on the first try. It's just too bad that for most mechanics there isn't enough time to read such things.

I just wanted to say, I have yet to do even E5, so I have no clue how E7 battle even looks, but thanks to all these explainations I feel already kinda comfortable with the mechanic and I'll surely come back here to read them if after watching a video I still didn't get something.

I don't see what is hard about this fight. I just cleared it last night on my first run no problem after watching a video. If you watched a video guide that explains the mechanics than you should have no problem at all. No time to react? That's bull, there is enough time.

Let me see if I can clear this up.

If you get by the wrong umbral/astral effect with vuln^, it hits you for over 200k damage and causes knockback. Not even a tank will survive it.

If you get by the wrong astral/umbral effect without a vuln^ (this can only happen at the start of the phase), it won't kill you if at near full health, but it still causes the knockback, and can send you off.

When the umbral/astral debuffs are not in effect and you just have to worry about the order of the portals, the attack just hits you for high damage and puts a vuln^ stack on you. Most players will survive this if at full health, and tanks will easily brush it off.

The mechanic is not a true one-shot, but after the boss uses its ultimate and combines both umbral/astral and portal, it's either live or die.

This is actually my favorite raid mechanic-wise. Once I figured out what to do I found it fun to math out when and where I had to stand to avoid being flavor blasted. I had much less fun on E8 where the fight is a lot more Team Jumprope and people kept failing (i.e. the healers were constantly dead and I can’t survive the UaAoE spam on my own).

But you can. You might have to eat a death or three before it clicks, but the E7 mechanics really aren’t that complicated. People just panic and/or lack spacial awareness so they keep missing how things work.

The same thing is true for E8 when I see people constantly getting stunned by Redress or running out for Holy when they don’t have to.

You know, it's kinda funny. Watching a video IS the best advice for clearing things. Also, you don't need to watch guides to clear content, it just makes things easier without wiping constantly. Apparently your two brain cells couldn't figure that out when making this statement or maybe it's just me trying to find the sarcasm in this.
