I just go by their character really. I don't care what people call me since it
really doesn't matter and I don't see the point of correcting them but
feel free to correct me. I just think people should play the game and not worry
about who's gender is who and let folks play what they want.

I know this isn't the topic at hand, but it always makes me giggle when females correct people when they've used a masculine pronoun for them. OK I totally get it...if it's that important to you, by all means please correct the person, but I can't help but think they just want to have special recognition because OMG FEMALE ON THE INTERNET, lets swoon and give them things!

There are definitely conversations where it may be relevant to the conversation going on, but it's almost always first thought when I see that:X

I'm sure that's not the case for many who do correct, but it's always my first thought :X
So I sometimes use he to refer to someone online, like on reflex. I have literally gotten into huge arguments with them and some random dude. The worst are those "husband and wife" couples in-game, the "husband" comes in and starts "protecting" her. I'm just over here like..

I think I did that exactly once - back when I was playing a male character and had this very unpleasent replacement-co-tank for our weekly Coil-raid. For T3 everyone in the group who could would change to a tank, so we were able to just run through, ignoring all the mobs etc. The best tank-gear most people who werent a tank-main had was the armor from LT - the WoL-set.
My Co-tank made a comment about how "gay" it looked and how REAL MEN like him and me would never wear it!
So... I changed into my WoL-armor and told him "I'm not a guy" - I think he actually made a comment about how he had never met a girl who played a tank almost as good as him aswell... could have been almost a compliment - hadnt I been the better tank in the first place.
    One of my fondest memories...

(Other than that I never cared about it - I might react slower when refered to as "he" because it takes me a second to realise "oh, you meant ME, sure, sure, sorry!" but I never correct them - even now, playing as a female character, I sometimes get refered to as "he")

It may not be relevant to the conversation at hand, but I'm a female playing a female character so why would anyone refer to me as 'he' unless they're making a whole bunch of assumptions? A bit like you just made assumptions about why a woman would correct you ... As Theo said, call people by the gender they're playing, if they don't like that, they'll tell you. But don't make assumptions about why they told you please because what you just said in the post I quoted was borderline offensive, at least to me. Stating that I'm female has got absolutely nothing to to do with me thinking about, wanting or seeking special treatment.

I could go ahead now and make some assumptions about you and your views on women but I'll be charitable instead and presume you really didn't mean to sound as though you think most women are mercenary and manipulative

I wasn't referring to only in-game interactions. In games I play, i will address people as what their character is unless I'm told/know otherwise.

But at any rate, you see this online all the time. You can be in the most mundane thread about a person's dog where someone is like "Oh man, his dog is cute!", but then OP has to correct them and tell them they're a chick. Them being female has absolutely no bearing on the cuteness of the dog, so why bring it up? To me that is incredibly silly.

For what it's worth, I'm female. Now give me all your gil and shinies.

So basically a woman who objects to the wrong gender pronouns is doing so because she's after 'stuff' or 'special treatment'? Wow. Okay ....

Did I say every woman who ever corrects anyone is only doing it purely for self-gain? Oh boy.

With that said, I do think it's quite petty in many situations, and it makes me giggle a bit when I see it. Jumping back specifically to games, it is quite well-known you can get tons of attention/goodies just for being female, or even just claiming to be. I think plenty of people take advantage of this in games.

As mentioned previously, there are obviously times where it may help to correct someone. Much like how I told you I'm female myself, because the way you were phrasing things makes it seem like you thought I was male. Some people just also dig their gender, hey, cool. You do you, but I can still think you're silly for correcting someone if it has no importance to the topic itself.

You certainly IMPLIED that every female who does this is doing it to gain some kind of advantage. You may not THINK it yourself, but even your joke at the end of your previous post strongly suggested you do think it( I'm female too, haha give me your money, with the last phrase crossed out) Your statement that you're female too became a provocation when you added the crossed-out addendum.

You're entitled to think what you like about anyone you meet in RL, online or in games, of course. But sweeping generalisations like this will skew your viewpoint at the very least and may possibly make you sound like a judgemental or prejudiced fool. So probably best to keep them to yourself.

I am happy to accept that you didn't mean this the way it sounded, that these women are merely 'silly' in your opinion, rather than manipulative. But since this whole thread is about folks being triggered, it's perhaps unwise to treat something as a joke that maybe distressing to someone else.
