Yep! A complete waste of resources. There is literally no point in wasting the supposed, "limited resources" to allow males to wear dresses. Some people might like to have joke characters, but I think their time could be better spent elsewhere.I'm not thrilled. I'd rather see the resources spent on making new facial hair options for male characters as well as new tattoo and scar options for male and female characters. Both of which have been requested many times over the years on this board and elsewhere, so it's disappointing that they're diverting previous resources towards something like this instead.
It's made particularly disappointing by Blizzard's recent announcement of a major overhaul of the character customisation of every playable race. It's time for FFXIV to do more on that front.

Especially after how they struggled with even getting Viera and Hrothgar in a finished state. Waste of resources, afaic.
When the game's story becomes self-aware:
Unfortunately the resources are already spent on this no going back or it would be a true waste of resources since it wouldn't benefit anyone at that point. This removing of genderlock gear has been requested as much as new customization for characters, i think the only difference between the two requests is how aware the devs are on the demand as bare in mind Yoshi P was shocked so many people wanted the WoL stubble from the trailer(something none of us would really be shocked by since we know how requested it is in the community).I'm not thrilled. It is possible they won't release all these yet until they sort out more of the current male exclusives for female characters like the Butler suit whose counterpart is already done for males, just that overall if they sort all of them out it will be more glamour for male characters than female ones because they are more female exclusive ones than male exclusive
I'll advise holding off on that as currently the ones done have all been obtained from somewhere else before the mog station(if they go up there anyway) rather than mog station exclusive outfits.
I would not call current Viera/Hrothgar in a finished state but this is not a true waste of resources, some people will be happy with these, some won't care, but because some would want these it is not a waste only to your own perception they are seen as a waste, an example of a true waste of resources would be Battle Diadem since it is gone.

Do you really think the desire to remove genderlocked items is even remotely comparable to the desire for enhanced character customisation? I'll go a step further: which of those two would players actually make use of in a way that enhances the game's longevity and profitability?Unfortunately the resources are already spent on this no going back or it would be a true waste of resources since it wouldn't benefit anyone at that point. Oh, it's not Viera or Hrothgar I'm calling the waste of resources. One has to wonder if they're doing this as a gesture to attenuate some of the (undeserved) PR they got over not adding mViera or fHrothgar, to the effect that they were "homophobic" or "sexist".I would not call current Viera/Hrothgar in a finished state but this is not a true waste of resources, some people will be happy with these, some won't care, but because some would want these it is not a waste only to your own perception they are seen as a waste, an example of a true waste of resources would be Battle Diadem since it is gone.
That's really my main concern about it, aside from the cost of going back and doing this for legacy gear. I'm not too bothered if they want to do it for future sets, provided that they don't begin creating gender-neutral sets as a rule to cut costs because of this issue. Also, good points regarding the "fit" of the gear.Yes, but there is an unfortunate habit that some small groups of people tend to take sub sets and use it as a representation of all or hold them up as an example to complete disprove a point rather than addressing the nuance.
There are averages for a reason, and the average male and average female have broad characteristics that are different from one another (Hip/waist ratios, hip heights/widths, leg lengths, shoulder and back widths, facial structure differences, height, weight distribution, muscle and bone mass and density, etc). And these characteristics are not inherently sexual. While you may have more effeminate males or masculine females, this grouping doesnt make up the majority or near majority as the distribution of body types is not linear, but a bell curve. While there is nuance and that there are some men and women who would benefit from clothing typically tailored to the opposite sex, it is not in such numbers that would really dispute my point.
As I said, most people do not understand that some clothes are designed to accentuate features on typical males or females and that when applied to the opposite sex, it does not work as well. If people want to dress in a certain manner of clothes that are tailored for the opposite sex, more power to em. Ive no problem with that, but it's fair to point out that its not going to look as flattering on a certain sex if its not designed for it. Case and point, 2Bs outfit on Hrothgar or Roe does not look great, but if people want it, cool. All of the clothing should be wearable by both sexes in the game, regardless if it looks bad to do so or not. More power to the individual and more options for people.
And to reiterate, the only issue Ill end up having is if they start designing all glamours and outfits as gender neutral - a design thought process that almost always ends up removing feminine accentuations from the designs and favoring a masculine type and build.

When the game's story becomes self-aware:
Conspiracy theories and unwarranted concerns like this (gender has never been a factor when it comes to designing attire in this game; have y'all already forgotten about 2.0 relic armor?) are exactly what I think OP means by "before you overreact".Do you really think the desire to remove genderlocked items is even remotely comparable to the desire for enhanced character customisation? I'll go a step further: which of those two would players actually make use of in a way that enhances the game's longevity and profitability?
