I have to agree with this in light of recent events.

Yes, "flexible" canon exists for gameplay reason, but that doesn't mean everything in the game is canon. There are optional contents that affect the MSQ or add to the lore of the world of Eorzea and there are other contents that don't.

The MSQ is not the only canon. Everything in the game your character can do is potentially canon in that that is is something that they could potentially experience. They are things that could potentially happen in the world and could potentially be part of the rich history of the world. There is more to any world than a single story line

Potentially canon is not canon. Canon is what the storywriters have to take account of when they make new stories moving forward. Any crossover event with WoW is not something the storywriters going to have to take account of in future story unless the collaboration is at the level of Nier's.
