They had higher graphics when 1.0 was out and the game couldn't handle them. It ran like crap.
There's a reason they had to downgrade them for 2.0.

Veteran healers don't care if we need to heal, but right now we don't. We want interesting things to do during the downtime other than a 30s dot and a single filler spell that hasn't changed from lvl 4 to lvl 90.
Dead DPS do no DPS. Raised DPS do 25/50% lower DPS. Do the mechanics and don't stand in bad stuff.
Other games expect basic competence, FFXIV is pleasantly surprised by it. Other games have toxic elitism. FFXIV has toxic casualism.[/LIST]
the "higher graphics" isnt the reason it ran like crap: it was the code, engine, the optimization, and highly questionable decisions giving flower pots as many polygons as a player's character. Bdo, the most visually impression mmo ever created, runs great on their mobile and ps4 all while looking 10x better than ff14 1.0. That 1.0 excuse is invalid.
I mean in fairness the engine was not built to handle it, it was a poorly optimised engine. But they pretty much rebuilt the engine from the ground up as the original engine had too many limitations. If I recall correctly it was a modification of the FFXIII engine, which was not built to handle an MMO like FFXIV. Plus as somebody mentioned...vases with ridiculous amount of polygons. So all-in-all it was badly done.
That said, I'd rather they focus on content, fixing things that need fixing and storytelling than graphics. Whilst I'd be happy to buy it if they made a HD texture pack for sale on the mogstation, but I'd rather not see them spend existing resource on it.
Plus GShade/ReShade is plenty IMO to beautify the existing graphics and SE a while back said that they are totally cool with people using it. I've managed to get some really decent looking screenshots out of GShade.

It is true that the original FFXIV's engine was the same as FFXIII's.
The current version uses a fork or FFXV's, so much more adequate for open areas.
I agree that I'd prefer the devs to focus on content, however, some textures in game are very low resolution and even if the game is mostly beautiful, if you look into the details it can be very weird. The fault comes to the dev team who chose to work on very low resolutions from the start, instead of making high res ones and downscale them after. This decision was probably made because they had to rush the 2.0 version in order to be able to release it in 2013.
I do really hope that we will get a graphic overhaul at some point. The next expansion pack would be the perfect time to do it in my opinion.
It's ReShade that's been tweaked to work better with FFXIV. One of the problems with ReShade is that some shaders, particularlly those that use the depth buffer can mess with your UI. Gshade doesn't mess with your UI and is packed with tonnes of presets.
Who's white knighting? I'm not sure it means what you think it means.omg stop this white knight blind rage you have going on spreading this nonsense of lies lol. Nothing is gonna be lost. They have many different teams for different parts of the game. That's like saying SE cant make other games because it'll take away from "ff14" resources.
At the end of the day, dev team has a budget, their resources exist within that budget and they have to allocate resources based on what they consider to be a priority. Some people would prefer than they spend that resource on other things as they are happy with the way the graphics are or they consider it a lower priority too. EG: if they spent less resource working on the story of Shadowbringers to work on making the game prettier, then the reception of Shadowbringers wouldn't have been as great as it was.
A HD graphics pack would be super nice. But I'd rather them work on more features to keep the game fun and engaging with new cool stuff, continue working on newer content and fixing problems. By all means, ask for it, but our feedback on such ideas are: "yes it'd be nice, but 'no' to it being at the expense of something else".
Hm never had any issues with my UI, but i think i will try it out of curiosity. thx
