Yes, there is plenty of WoW hate around these parts, but that wasn't quite the sentiment I got from her comment. I'd say it's a fairly valid concern. While they may be cordial on social media, adding a constant in-game reminder of their biggest competitor into XIV itself probably isn't all that wise.

Its not like something like that wasn't happened. The collab with Monster Hunter World was a thing.

EDIT: And that could be an marketing action that could benefit both, since every gaming news out there would be speaking about both games for free. So, it's a win-win between Square-Enix and Blizzard.

The difference is in the writing chops of the team here and the team at Blizzard. It's in the way they handle those things, not in the simple fact that they exist. I think Blizzard wants to convey a fairly anti-imperialist story, but simply can't do so effectively because their "budget" for story is completely anemic. Their current expansion is a testament to writer hubris, with half of their playerbase watching in shock as an entire playable race is put to the brink of extinction and the next year and a half is spent discussing and showing how it made the ones who killed them "feel bad". That's a bad trope, and beyond that, it's deeply offensive. It's irresponsible writing.

I don't think that is their intention, but since they commit so little resources to storytelling while also wishing to tell a story of massive scope it simply doesn't play out. In XIV it's not uncommon to touch on multiple plotlines/subplots and points of view in any given patch. WoW is unable to do this because they are a "story second" game, and Blizzard themselves have all but acknowledged this. Past their flashy cinematics they are adepts at writing checks they simply can't cash in on with their writing. It's a game for raiding and dungeon grinding and little else at this point, and it excels at those things without a doubt. There is nothing here in XIV that holds a candle to the Mythic+ system, and WoW's raids continue to the standard imo.

So, yes, it's fair to accuse me of not wanting such a cross over because of my own grievances with their writers, but I think it's also fair that I have such a grievance considering I have been playing Warcraft since Tides of Darkness. But extending beyond Warcraft and my own dislike of Blizzard, I'll go ahead and say that "crossovers" should be kept to a minimum in general. XIV is at its best when it is deeply committed to telling the story of Eorzea, all of Eorzea, not travelers from the other dimension, especially ones who would clash so garishly with the aesthetic of the game itself like Thrall or Varian Wrynn or Tyrande Whisperwind or Sylvanas. It would be utterly bizarre aesthetically. I'm aware that we can justify just about anything due to the way the cosmology works here, but I don't think that gives license to just do whatever you want.

At the end of the day it's not my story though, so they are free to write how they please. I've been pretty satisfied here overall and look forward to my adventures. If the day comes that I'm not, then I'll make like I did with Warcraft and simply stop playing. I really cannot imagine a universe in which Activision would let their IP be used in a Final Fantasy game though. That would really be something and I'd eat my hat.

I think it'd be a fun timed event, Yoshi-P said it was the series he would really love to do a collab with.

I know there's this hive mentality where you have to pick one over the other, but I think like Smash Bros is an example of companies working together to celebrate gaming that a collab between the two would help celebrate two of the most popular MMO's of our time.

Think it of this: You are going to plan a BBQ with your Football enthusiast neighbours and after that you want to watch Football with your mates. Unfortunately, one of your neighbours, Bob, dislikes Football and will only talk about Baseball. You are not hating on Bob, but he would not fit into the Football fans as Baseball fan, so you do not invite him in the first place.
Your scenario is a completely closed off space with a few friends. The majority of FFXIV players don't hate WoW. Also, in your scenario, baseball would be completely shoved down your throat, which is not the case in the "What if WoW got an event?" scenario because you could completely ignore it.

Collaboration events usually work both ways. So, if FFXIV have a constant reminder that Wow exists, WoW, with its still higher active playerbase than XIV, will have a constant reminder that XIV exists.

The biggest thing isn't even on SE's end -- it's on Blizzard's end. WoW doesn't really do crossovers except with other Blizzard properties, and even then those are fairly rare (there's a hearthstone board toy, you can get a Zergling or Diablo minion, etc.) WoW has a crapton of references to other popular media (the Cloud/Aerith pair in Dalaran being an appropriate example) but, to my knowledge, no crossover events with outside companies.

This is disregarding any potential issues with doing friendly crossovers with direct competitors. MHW might have a lot of overlap with FFXIV in terms of playerbase, but the two aren't in the same genre. Neither is Yokai Watch. WoW and FFXIV are directly in the same genre. And yes, FFXIV did do two FFXI crossovers but that's within the same company, so meh.

That being said, I'd like one. I'd love to have a Lich King fight or something in FFXIV. Heck, his arena is already a circle you can fall off of, it's just like every fight we already have!

I would love to see a cross-over event.
Yoshi-P enjoys such things and even said himself that he would like to do one. And honestly, what's so bad about it? It's not like every part of the design someone considers bad will suddenly carry over and destroy precious FFXIV. Not being able to tolerate a few items you don't even have to get for yourself simply because it's a reminder of the big bag boogeyman named WoW seems a bit much.
I don't care about FFXV, I don't like the car, so I didn't get it. If they did a Tera cross-over, a game I personally never liked, I'd simply not do the event. But if others loved the game and are happy with getting a few Tera-themed items, I'd let them have their fun. I don't feel any negative impact on my own enjoyment of the game just because others might enjoy things I don't care for.

A lot of WoW-themed items like mounts, minions or even some glamour weapons would actually fit nicely into the FFXIV world. Definitely FAR less immersion-breaking than the car if you want to bring that argument to the table.
Pretty sure a lot of people would like to see some of the well-known weapons, adjusted to FFXIV graphics of course, to see as a glamour item. Thunderfury, Benediction/ Anathema, Ashenbringer etc.
Tiny little dragon minions trying to breath fire but just coughing up smoke would be really cute, too.

The biggest trouble with having this sort of crossover would be the clashing art styles no matter who they take from WoW it would look very off in FFXIV and vice versa, other than that i do not think there is much a problem with it if it happens.

    Nah.

Keep FF & WoW far away from each other.
