I think you can actually do that using Macros! you see healers all the time with unique raise macros! I'm pretty sure there's some custom emote macros by default!
You can indeed! See this Reddit guide, linked below.

Thank you for the advice, but macros aren't what I want. I want to just type a single line to do an impromptu custom (animated) emote. You can indeed! See this Reddit guide, linked below.

Using macros won't work for me, because you have to put macros that you've pre-made onto a hotbar to use them, and I already have 3 hotbars on my screen full of spells/abilities. I don't want to fill up more hotbars with random one-off emotes to click on.
Allowing custom emote text with the emote's specific slash command would add more flexibility to the emote system. Then I don't have to fill up hotbars, or I don't have to hunt around some nested hotbars with the mouse trying to remember what the icon for the custom emote I'm trying to find looks like.

Since there is already a way to do what you are looking to do(albeit not exactly the way you WANT to do it), I doubt they'd spend dev time on such a request. But, good luck to you either way!Thank you for the advice, but macros aren't what I want. I want to just type a single line to do an impromptu custom (animated) emote.

After about two months I finally remembered to get footage of the dance I'm talking about. This.

Meanwhile I'm here hugging NPCs like Curious Gorge during WAR storyline, Ysh'tola during SB, Tataru, Alphinaud during HW, Aymeric for obvious reasons, and Haurchefaunt, and I'll just await a hug from them... forever. *cries in a corner*I'd like emotes like /hug and /fistbump to be adjusted, or any emote that should involve two people, really.
Basically, change them to being co-emotes. I do an emote on you, then you do the same on me. Boom. Fancy new hug emote that's a bit more involved and looks less like you're awkwardly hugging air.
Change them to something of an idling emote I guess... You do /hug, and the emote text either says "You await a hug from anybody" or "You await a hug from <target>" depending on your target or lack of, perhaps with a paused version of the existing emote (so with your arms out waiting). The other player then reciprocates the emote and you do a far more quality looking version of it.
Along that sort of line, a /pickup emote would be hilarious too... Who doesn't want to toss a Dwarf? Or see a Lalafell hurl a Hrothgar? Interactive emotes like that have so much funny potential... Shame for PS3 limitations...
Would also love to see this style of emote applied better to minions. We already sort of have it, with /pet and /handover eliciting a response from minions. I'd like to see it expanded upon and improved though, like /hug having you pick up the minion and actually hug it, rather than the current "I'm hugging the air above you" emote we have...
I'd like to see an emote for 'self-love' - just hugging yourself. The WoL could use some self-love after everything that they dealt with.
That and a 'Time out' emote for comedy sake.
