You guys baffle me to no end. Let's do some simple math here: A player in a bikini has 90 DEF; A player in Sentinel gear with a focus on defense materia combined with Defender II has around 900+ DEF (With Rampart II 1000+). A tenfold increase and some change, give or take. You tell me how that adds up in your head.

In Persona 3 and 4 that gear is definitely strong in stats and you can tell in battle.
As a whole I'm the one making bad comparisons here too in P4 one wrong move can wipe out your entire party but in XIV you can just keep that axe swinging because the worst thing that can happen is your gear getting a minor dent in it.

God I love P4 so much it's insane. Can't wait for golden version on vita.
Now that is a really good example of a battle system that is fun and all RPGs can take inspiration from.

    Hellfire ignores gear defense.

Sure, I guess we can argue about the devs decision of removing magic defense from gear, which does have the side effect of making gear mostly useless against magic unless it has PIE+ or Mag Evasion.

Under these rules, it is true that defense matters very little against Ifrit since he hardly uses melee attacks past the first phase and 90% of damage mitigation comes from evading his moves, not soaking it up with defense.

But, IMO, making fights based on avoiding damage instead of reducing it with gear is just as valid as making fights where you can't really avoid most moves and require defense gear to survive.

Hah, and now I assume you're implying that a bikini has the hidden effect of +1,000 fire resistance? Simple question: throughout all of history, in what wars were swimwear even on the list of appropriate equipment?

I'm not implying anything at all.

What I've said is that they removed magic defense from ALL GEAR in this game, therefore it really doesn't matter if you're using bikinis or haubergeons against Ifrit's magic moves, which obviously includes Hellfire.

I've also said that we can, of course, debate how good or bad that idea is.

    LOL

God - Hey person saying stats make a "huge" difference listen, stats dont really work correctly but the devs are working to fix that.

Person saying stats make a "huge" difference - No God you are wrong, stats make a "huge" difference!

    God - Well not really.
If a person that has 900+ DEF has same survivability chance as a person that has 90.
If a person that has 60+ Magic ATK potency has same chances at defeating a primal as a person that has 11.
If a person that has all melded Lv45+ Crafting gear with all correct stats melded on his +1 MH tool has same chanses at an HQ result as a person that uses Cotton Shepherd's set with an NQ no materia MH tool.

Person saying stats make a "huge" difference - No God you are wrong, stats make a "huge" difference!

Stats do make a difference but not a HUGE one and thats pretty much been proven already, the difference is actually so tiny it's barely noticable, sure as hell aint something worth spending all your gil. on and (or) arguing with your friends about.
I am not hating or anything.
I still love this game and still go for double melds.. it's fun. but i'm being realistic too

I agree with you. However, I don't find it realistic enough for my tastes, and gear should absolutely contribute a lot more than they do toward survivability. What they should do is strip all gear of their numbered variance and in their place captions that read something like: "Enemy will hit you hard"; "Enemy will hit you harder"; "Enemy will hit you hardest".

    umm

    ifrit - skill check
for all those who say MMOs are all about gear - there you have it a fight that is all about skill. Of course if you have proper gear you'd prolly kill him faster.

Now all the people saying gear and stats don't matter, let's see a group with no pumped attributes and no gear other than their weapon go into Moogle.

SE is giving us different challenges but ppl will always complain.

Ya well. i'm saying don't make 4 points of a stat make a difference but 50+ on a single stat should make
way more of a difference than they make right now in the game.
I'm not changing my Champion's Lance +1 to the "Tumor on a Stick" (Ifrit's Harpoon) if there aint gonna be a good
clearly noticable extra damage output from it.

That's all i'm saying, not really arguing.
