She is referring to us, even the quests tell you this in game, since everyone knew the Exarch was still attempting to summon the WoL to become the WoD to save the land. The entire trailer was just showing what they were going through while we were still in the source.

I get that, but instead of using saying Until our friend returns, which would indicate that we have already been there, they could have said, until our friend arrives, I will hold the line. Unless of course they are referring to someone completely different. This could be true because, there still is upcoming content. She is referring to us, even the quests tell you this in game, since everyone knew the Exarch was still attempting to summon the WoL to become the WoD to save the land. All I know is that while I thought the story was good, I was disappointed that we had nothing to do with being an actual warrior of darkness. I wanted zodiark to bless me or some jazz
You were being an actual warrior of darkness bringing the darkness back to a world where the overwhelming light was being an oppressive evil that was going to destroy the world.
Do not confuse that with getting to be a villain running around causing chaos for shits and giggles. It is the standard Dark is not Evil and Light is not Good trope use. We are Heroes, whether our enemy is the Light or the Darkness.

well i believe what she was meaning is that the Scions are waiting for WOL-D to return to them not the firstI get that, but instead of using saying Until our friend returns, which would indicate that we have already been there, they could have said, until our friend arrives, I will hold the line. Just as you stated, who said wielding darkness meant we had to go around being a villain? I wanted shadow or darkness based powers as well from this, and it’s my only real complaint of the expansion that we were more of a light eater/battery than a user of darkness. I was expecting a tie to Zodiark or something, not just to go and eat all the light of their world then expunge it out. I’m still the “WoL” who uses blessings of light, I am just called a different name by different people. You were being an actual warrior of darkness bringing the darkness back to a world where the overwhelming light was being an oppressive evil that was going to destroy the world.

Imo the entire "Master Matoya" bit in the story was completely and utterly unnecessary. It had absolutely no plot relevance at all. Including it in the trailer did nothing but generate a bunch of wild theories that turned out inaccurate. I also think its rather stupid, too. For one, let's buy this idea and say none of the members of the Night's Blessed used their real names. Of all the names Y'Shotla could've chosen, why did it have to be that one, the same as her Master's? Also, why was Urianger calling her 'Master Matoya" in the trailer? I would get it if one of the Night's Members called her that, neither he nor anyone else one calls her that after we leave the Greatwood(That scene also had the setup for calling her "Master Matoya" and sending us into unnecessary theory meltdown for months. I would not be surprised if the entire "Night's Blessed don't use their real names" thing was written just so they could get that line in the trailer.)
We're basically the Warrior of Light though. Even more so than usual since we absorb a ton of it. We don't gain any Dark powers, we don't align with Dark elements, we gain no Shadow abilities, Zodiark has no influence over us, Death Knight was the cover class but there aren't Death Knights in the first that I remember.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the MSQ and technically we brought the night back, but the whole "Become what you must" and "be the Warrior of Darkness" lead up before launch was a little bit of a let down when we were nothing of the sort. People just labeled us as that because we were saving them and their prophecy said the Warrior of Darkness did that.
