Why hello there fellow sentients. If you would like to make a giant fuss over which pronoun gets used to address you, eventually in the intrest of avoiding conflict due to people guessing wrong either a very generic pronoun will have to be adopted, on courtesy labels will need to be worn until the time all life forms have developed and matured enough to use telepathy responsibly. Until such a time passes, please try to work with each and understand each other as much as possible.
Have a nice day! This message brought to you on the behalf of the Omega Cult.
Though humor aside, eventually thanks to how touchy some get over all this identity stuff, it won't be him/her he/she we use, but things like sentient and organism before long as people will get fed up with playing the guessing game and getting blasted whenever they guess wrong because appearances don't match someones internal psyche. Do you really want to go down the road to the use of what could potentially be deemed dehumanizing pronouns for the sake of not offending anyone accidentally? There are some that may not identify as one gender or the other, the same applies for species too. And its only a matter of time before technology allows for that to go from being fantasy for them to reality.
I think it would be better to just ask SE to make Pixie's a playable race. Its not gonna happen, but would make more sense to keep it with the race that uses such language. Instead of putting Nonbinary Pronouns into a Fantasy game that uses Old English.
I am noticing a pattern here. This topic always comes up every couple months or so and for some reason I almost never see this on the other forums of other MMO's. Least not in such a high rate. Don't know why it is running rampant here on the FFXIV forums. Hell, most of the RP companies I been in (least from my experience on Balmung) always has that one or two people who get offended over every little thing and more so when topics they support like this pop up. They share it, some people say they don't care or agree with it, and they get crucified by them and leadership.
Is FFXIV supposed to be some sort of safe space where bad things from the rest of the internet or real life can't get them?
The pixies were only gender neutral in the English version, in other language they are referred to as female/male respectfully and I believe, Titania as a queen (or at least, she was revealled as queen of the fairies?)
People don't really realise how much work something like this can be. If you add in the 50(+?) "official" genders (which still only use like he/she/they as pronouns) someone that goes like "I identify as an ocean squirrelkin for my gender! call me seaself!" will go into a tizzy. So you have to allow like... people to add them in like it was a name.
And then there's the voiced cutscenes, the only way it can work with the 1,500 possible pronouns would be to get rid of he/she and just call your character gender neutral ones, which would make me uncomfortable. And what about the other languages?
Your character isn't you. Its male/female and easily swapped between the two in a pseudo-medieval universe where "gender" likely refers what parts you have and is a nonissue.
Just like how your biologically male dog does not identity as a female and enjoy having its nails painted pink and wearing a pink tutu.
I support this idea 100%!
A single toggle "M/F/NB" for he/him she/her or they/them doesn't sound super difficult. I suspect most of the work would go into making sure dialogue and quests don't go funky.
That and the voice acting.
Honestly I've always thought they should have just defaulted to they/them to begin with. That way they only have to record one version of the lines instead of two.
Can we keep gender politics out of videogames?
Thanks.
Well if you want to make a poll for this I'll gladly join since I'm Non-Binary myself ❤️
Just nitpicking here but, Feo Ul did refer to herself as a she in the English version, so some pixies might use gendered pronouns
