Going to be honest, I feel like you shouldn't be able to do any content unsynced.

If you want to do content & be rewarded for said content, learn the content.
I don't see how it's fun going into content where the hardest thing that needs to be done is get the group together in the partyfinder.
That's only a small part of why all content should be able to be unsynced. The other part of it is the *challenge*. Yeah, there's a lot of things that trying to do unsynced is just a faceroll because you outgear it so much, but some things are actually harder *not* because of the damage numbers or whatever, but because of the much lower party size. My friend and I enjoy two-manning content, just trying to push the hardest things we can, and see how far we can go. We do this in many games. There are some things we'll likely never be able to 2 man purely because of how mechanics go, but that doesn't mean we don't like giving it a good try regardless, see if there's any way we can perhaps cheese the mechanic, or maybe somehow skip it entirely.
To this effect, I even think *current* content should be able to be unsynced purely because of that reason: The fun of the challenge, push as hard and as far as you can go.
THIS is why I say more options, not less.
I would like to offer a middle ground then, as you do raise a solid point. That's only a small part of why all content should be able to be unsynced. The other part of it is the *challenge*. Unsynced runs with less people can be a thing, which I haven't thought of, really.
Unsynced runs shouldn't offer rewards.
I'm fine with that. With the way FF14 works, you can viably keep old content balanced and rewarding, which other MMOs like WoW couldn't do, which makes the whole "If you want the loot, work for it" ideal a valid approach. I'm half of the opinion that unsynced should still drop loot since at this point it's all entirely meaningless cosmetic loot (unless you're desynthing for profit i suppose?), but I'd still be fine with it.
I just want to be able to go into wherever whenever I want and find a good challenge in working around the fights.
I feel that you should be able to play all content unsynced, but that rewards should reflect this.
So if the Great Hunt were to be unsynced... no mount reward.
An alternative would be the way WoW handles mounts, too. If you clear the Mythic raid while it's relevant, 100% drop rate (doesn't necessarily need to be 100% in FF14 of course, just keep drop rates as current). The moment it's no longer relevant, ie, doing old content unsynced, the drop rate plummets to an abyssmal 0.1% drop rate. You want the mount? Put in the work, one way or the other.
