Ran'jit's strength makes no sense

At one point he says something like "no one can defeat one who has mastered the art of Gakumatsu". I just assume that he first distinguished himself as Norvrandt's greatest martial artist/warrior in general, which led to him being recruited as the general of Eulmore's army. It's no weirder than Zenos being able to 1v1 us and win.

So regarding the Elidibus thing.

As Zenos mentions, he never properly fought Elidibus to begin with. Elidibus didn't put his all into it (probably because there was no point in doing so), laid out the exposition Zenos wanted, then abandoned Varis to his fate. Zenos openly laments not getting the chance to 1v1 himself, too.

I'm not sure why I forgot about that.

On a note relating Ran'jit, there's actually some lore about him in the A rank Huracan's description which mentions that his dragon is a familiar made from his own aether, and that said hunt was actually his father's familiar, but he ended up being turned by a sin eater (Prospective S+ rank, I'd like to hope) leaving the thing to wander aimlessly.

How he somehow goes from being able to beat us AND most of the Scions to having trouble with just Thancred felt kind of silly and I was half-expecting that he was part sin eater or something to be that strong.

though that's not the only power discrepancy that's kind of bugging me.

On this part.

Thancred in the rp duty was giving everything he had, bringing himself to near death to fight Ran'jit to a standstill. Combine this with Minifillia's special ammo and it was only just enough. Compare that to us not too long after when we pretty handily beat him. Which itself could be said to be weird since he did have us beat in our first fight with him with allies but it could be chalked up to his rather special abilities compared to many foes we have faced, which could also be said to only work once unlike Zenos's overwhelming strength in his first two encounters.

... Zenos could overpower Elidibus, it seems to be implied that Zenos can absorb Ascians with his Echo and that could be the reason that Elidibus hightailed out of there.

Whoa that bugged me too and made me slightly annoyed about FFXIV ennemies' strength scaling. I haven't finished the msq yet and hope there'll be a very good reason for his crazy invincibility. For now i'm just glad someone else was bugged by it haha

Spoilers below aka I agree with you OP:

Honestly that character was one of the few story parts that annoyed me. I already greatly disliked Zenos...but now having even another really strong person that not only defeats us in single combat but all of us combined is just bad. If you want someone that stands against us why not let them use cheap methods: Like an unknown poison that shortly takes away our senses, or hostages so we cant go full out. Why need an NPC that somehow is so much stronger than we are but then comes to a standstill with Thancred only and later is defeated by us in single combat?

Regardig power levels.

I don't mind that Ran'jit could beat us. i mind that for no real explanation other than 'we gained a few levels' we're able to beat him. I also wish that thancred had just killed him in Ahm Araeng, he really felt more like Thancred's foil and villain than the WOL's.

As for Zenos and Elidibus, keep in mind Lahabrea was also unsundered and not as powerful as Emet, so it could be that he was the strongest of the three in terms of 'power level.' We also managed to defeat Elidizenos 1 on 1, the only reason we 'lost' was because of being called at a poor time and Elidibus getting infinite 1 ups.

I'd be fine if say,

Ran'jit beat us using some sort of technique, and we found a way to counter it, and then were able to beat him. But just throwing us into hopeless boss fights with scripted losses 'oh no he's too pooooooowerful' and then inexplicably having us beat the same character later for no reason other than assuming it's because our levels got higher is disapointing.Take Fordola for example, after the cannon incident Uriangr made a way to turn her power against her and we used that to defeat her. That was much more narratively satisfying, if still a bit convenient, than how Zenos and Ran'jit were handled.
