Our subscriptions pay for the monthly updates and major patches every 2-3 months. If we didn't pay subs, then all we would get is the initial content at release of the expansion with occasional "balance" patches.

The cash shop is all COMPLETELY optional. There is nothing there that gives you an advantage in game of any kind. The development of assets that are sold on the cash shop takes time and resources separate from game development... aka money. That's why they charge for them.

I consider them as luxury goods and only buy them on special occasions: birthdays, Xmas presents, etc.
