First off, they said that about HW and SB too, yet here we are. From Yoshida during Mr Happy's interview.
He admitted that in 5.0, mobs will in general hit significantly harder than they do now and will require playing more defensively as tank and require more healing from healers, reducing the amount of downtime healers have to dps significantly.
Second, even if it is true it's only true in the short term. Things in this game get outgeared very quickly. A dungeon's difficulty has to be balanced around a fresh 80 in i420 gear, but what happens a month or two later when everyone is i450+ and still running those same dungeons?
Healers have like 15-20 spells meant for healing and support as opposed to 3 dps spells. I think that makes healing more engaging but obviously healers who only choose to use Cure and Medica II may feel differently.

You talk about healer DPS like it's some kind of tradecraft. You don't even have to boil it down; from core to surface all it is, is something for healers to do during their downtime. They don't have to worry about positionals, procs, rotations, keeping up a personal buff, and their healing and DPS skills don't interact with each other. You have a dot or two to upkeep, and a filler spell to use when there is nothing else for you to do. That's it. For the most part, this is remaining intact in ShB. The only healer that's in trouble when it comes to potential boredom from the changes is SCH.
I'm not saying what is happening with SCH isn't a problem. They are losing half of their identity come 5.0. However, what I am saying is that DPSing as a healer isn't as glorified and engaging as people are making it out to be. I for one am actually quite bored when I am DPSing. The reason for this isn't the limited number of skills we have at our disposal, or how simple it is; the reason is because I am able to DPS because nothing is happening that requires my attention in the role I have chosen to play. Nobody is KO'd, nobody needs a cleanse, nobody needs a heal, I am not targeted by a specific mechanic, etc.
The truth is, we are able to excel at our jobs by being proactive. Being a reactive healer and using GCDs to heal when all the incoming damage is scripted is playing the job at a subpar level. Ever wonder how much your DPS would suffer if you had to actually react to damage instead of plan for it? If you've ever gone into a fight blind, you should already have the answer to that question.
It doesn't have anything to do with our offensive capability. Our DPS is appreciated because it ISN'T factored into DPS checks; it's expected because our downtime is ridiculously large; it's easy because it's not supposed to be our primary function in the role of healer. Right now it is our primary function though, because we're doing it for 90% of the encounter.
tl;dr? I DPS as a healer because there is nothing else for me to do.
I don't even trust Mr Happy to fasten his own pants properly, let alone communicate about changes to a role in this game.Mr Happy points out that things hit significantly harder and healing is more necessary, and Yoshida responds that he was surprised he picked up on it so quickly from just the media tour. That they changed so that healers will have to do more healing, and tanks will have to use CD more often.
There were other interviews as well where they mention 5.0 will have significantly less downtime because there is more focus on healing.
Can I see a direct quote from Yoshi P stating any of this?
I should probably clarify, I know healer DPS is a simple matter. The thing that I consider tradecraft, something one can excel at, is the healing itself. I just equate it as part of pushing our DPS because using our heals efficiently is for the benefit of allowing us to contribute more to damage. Hence why the core of my argument is "We DPS because it's a way to utilize our healer skills to help the party further."
As for the subject at hand, I prefer weaving DPSing and Healing.
For me, just healing isn't interesting enough, from a gameplay-perspective.And I don't like having to spam heal during most of/the whole fight... >w>()
They haven't really tried to introduce new healing gameplay like how they introduce new DPS gameplay.
While it is simple. The fact remains that way too many glorify and make it sound way more engaging than it actually is. Which lead to the same many to get this illogical sense of superiority and belittling those who dare not follow their same mindset.I should probably clarify, I know healer DPS is a simple matter. Interpretation:
People who work hard to maximize their contribution to a group get upset when they see healers afking 80% of the time.
