There, fixed it for you. USA =/= America. America is a really big continent that happens to include the US.

On topic: There was a time where there was constant maintenance from 7pm. I almost stopped paying to wait until it got better. It's annoying, but at leats it's only a day.

"America" (as I understand it from over here in Australia) is specifically a shortened form of "the United States of America", a country within the continent of North America.

There is no single continent called America, and I would understand any reference to "America" to be equal to "USA".

    Depends.
"America" is also used as a term for North America and South America together, and that was also the original meaning of the name.
Also, in many places America as a whole is actually considered to be a single continent. In other places it is considered to be composed of two continents - North and South America.

    Apparently so.

For the record, I just typed "America" in to Wikipedia's search bar, hit Enter, and was immediately redirected to the page "United States". Some selections from that article...

    Wikipedia: United States

"America", "US", and "USA" redirect here. For the landmass comprising North, Central and South America, see Americas.

    ETYMOLOGY

The short form "United States" is also standard. Other common forms are the "U.S.", the "USA", and "America".

A citizen of the United States is an "American". "United States", "American" and "U.S." refer to the country adjectivally ("American values", "U.S. forces"). In English, the word "American" rarely refers to topics or subjects not directly connected with the United States.
    Wikipedia: American (word)

The meaning of the word American in the English language varies according to the historical, geographical, and political context in which it is used. American is derived from America, a term originally denoting all of the New World (also called the Americas). In some expressions, it retains this Pan-American sense, but its usage has evolved over time and, for various historical reasons, the word came to denote people or things specifically from the United States of America.

In modern English, American generally refers to persons or things related to the United States of America; among native English speakers this usage is almost universal, with any other use of the term requiring specification. However, this usage is seen by some as a semantic "misappropriation" by those who argue that "American" should be widened in English to also include people or things from anywhere in the American continents.

I'm an American. We call our country America. I'm from America. (not all that proud about it, evidenced by the fact I'm an expat in Japan, but that's besides the point).

What you and the other poster are referring to is "the Americas". That refers to the entirety of North and South America. No one from Canada, Mexico, or South America refers to themselves as an American or being from America. At the very best (for your position), they will say "I'm from the Americas". But most times they'll just say their country, North America, or South America.

    This^

Also of note in terms of 'America', many English speaking countries outside the US will refer the USA as simply, "The States" - another catch all term that doesn't necessarily have to apply to just the US, but does anyway. Those of us here in the south just tend to say, "Im 'murican! Wooo!!"
