FF14 is based on MSQ. When the V1 end in 2012 it was MSQ and whan ff14ARR come it was MSQ. If SE changed that that mean the foundation of the game change. This is why ppl are so afraid of something that's gonna never happen. I think.

And I hate the fact that stories are not required for dungeons and raids, especially when you get part of the story in the dungeon/raid itself. Even worse, the stories for the dungeons/raids are not even mandatory for zone/faction story completion, which means the story itself is broken because you can literally skip parts of it, especially if you missed out when it's current content.

And from what I can tell, the reason why they're not mandatory is because WoW players complain about being forced to do dungeons/raids. So while people here say stories should be separated from dungeons/raids because people just want to play MMO, people in WoW are saying they should be separated because they don't want to play with other people in PVE, lol. The problem with that is when you get situations like in WoW where things break because the quests are not connected. I missed out on Legion, but because I wanted to unlock some allied races, I had to do Legion content and I had to search around for what I needed to do and sometimes the information is out of date because it assumes you're playing while it's current content and not after the fact and going back.

With FFXIV, every quest is connected nicely for the most part, and it'll stay that way regardless when you start playing or when you unlock that particular content barring some notable changes like Crystal Tower raid unlock, which the company would then send out a notice announcing the change.

I much prefer FFXIV's way where contents stay largely the same after it's put in the game and quests are connected nicely for the most part.

Except that it's not a problem, you seeing it as a problem doesn't make it one just because it doesn't fall in line with how you play the game. They aren't removing the story from you, they added the MSQ skip books for people who don't care about that part of the game. It is a option for someone who doesn't care about that aspect of the game, it has no impact on you personally. Just because the game puts emphasis on the story doesn't mean that every single person that tries out the game is going to be interested in it, the skip books give more players more options for how they want to approach the game and more options is never a bad thing.

I will say that at least the MSQ skip keeps the structure of the story. Your character still completed those quests you skipped unlike in WoW where progression breaks because you literally just skipped the quests and they're still there undone even though your character is now doing quests that supposedly happened after those quests you skipped.

By optional I mean not obligatory, the story can be optional while still being the focus. SE can still market and use the story as an element the wish to promote and keep as the focus, but keeping something as the focus does not inherently means it has to be forced or a requirement to engage in other content of the game.

Maybe I am just dense but I just do not see how making something optional automatically makes something less important. The importantance is determined by the resources going into it, and no one is asking them to limit said resources, just nice QoL change for those that honestly do not care about the story and already skip it.

FC mate pointed out an example SWTOR the focus is on story or so they say but in theory if you really wanted to you could never touch the story content and still take part in pvp and pve content.

It's not for YOU to say what the game is for. It doesn't matter what you think the game should be, you saying it isn't going to make it magically become true. The fact of the matter is, the skip potions and level boosts were added into the game to bring in more players that like different aspects of the game. Just because they don't enjoy the story doesn't mean they shouldn't be playing the game nor are you in any position to dictate how people should play the game. Get over yourself.

It's not about importance, but about structure. See my earlier post about my experience with WoW and its optional and disconnected stories/questlines, especially for someone who did not experience them when they were current content.

I was able to caught up with FFXIV without having to look up outside resources because most of everything is centered around one simple continuous questline called the MSQ, which is a focal point of the game, whereas I had to look up outside resources to make sense of WoW's more convoluted questlines, which is exacerbated by other design choices, but those are not the point of this thread.

What I am saying is everything within FFXIV story can remain as it is but maybe just make the content a level gate instead of story. No one is asking them to remove the MSQ tracker, with that tracker it would be impossible to really lose track of the msq like it is in WoW.

And as I mentioned above, that's a slippery slope to where the developer may put less emphasis on the story if it's just going to be optional content, which would be missing the point of the story. The story is the story because content is structured around it. Once you decouple game content from the story, then it's no longer a story of the game, just a story tacked into the game.

Right now, people who don't care about story can pay a one-time $25 fee per character.

People who care about story won't have any way of resolving their problem if dev starts to deemphasize the story because it's optional content. At that point, it's no longer MSQ, just a long side quest.

You don't care but you tell people that the game isn't for them if they just want to do the end game stuff. I doubt that you never watched a guide or got tips from someone who watched guides, but if you never have you should maybe start with it. It will only help you to improve...

The story in WoW is relevant if you want to know the full lore, if you don't want to know the full lore then you can just level and play the end game. The game isn't just really forcing you to do it except you want some certain extras like flying in and after WoD and so on. Just because you don't have to do it doesn't mean it isn't relevant.
