This. There is enough grinding to do with all the classes to level up already. I quit FFXI because it was way too much grind, don't make FFXIV a grind-festival.Really? Like what? Because the modern MMOs that I've played that require subscription fees do not have this at all, so saying "mostly all MMOs" have this feature is either a niche market of MMOs that I've never played (maybe overseas EU/Asia MMOs), or just you being an XI purist desperately clinging on to some ridiculous notion of excessive grinding in MMOs being rewarding or some misplaced sense of accomplishment from getting one. I am more inclined to believe the latter.
Secondly, merits just adds more pathetic grinding to the game. XIV doesn't need more grinding because it already has more than the average modern MMO. We need content. More than five very short and brief grand company quests each patch.
Content =/= Grinding.
Third, merits were nothing more than a horrible implementation of 'talent trees' that XI threw in for a gross and monotonous time sink. Not to mention it had little to no customization because you were 'required' to have certain merits to do anything.
If anything, I'd much prefer to see a system developed around quests (at ALL levels) that allows your character to modify a new system that works sort of like talents and/or merits. I would much rather go out and actually accomplish something like say, killing all the primals, awarding one talent specialization and/or re-specialization point. Not only does this type of task actually feel like you accomplished something, but it encourages linkshells to help newer players while utilizing old content instead of throwing it away when the next patch arrives.
Big no to merits.
LOL cash shop! SE's way to tell their player how they appreciate them... pull the carrot and empty your pockets $$$
And to those who support it: you are kicking yourselves. -- We just need to sit back and laugh at people with cash shop items.
(Marvelous economics IQ test!)
