I think they mean specializations, like on WoW. If you are unfamiliar, as an example a Druid in Wow can be either a tank OR a melee dps OR a ranged dps OR a healer. A Paladin can be a tank, or a melee dps, or a healer. So on and so forth.

Okay, I can see that. I've not played WoW really (or enough to gauge it) and understand. But that makes sense.
Specializations also solve the issue with buttons bloating. The same skill can have different effect based on the current "stance" (like Warrior's Fell Cleave/Inner Beast, Monk's shoulder tackle).
