I'm not making assumptions, though. My first point is pointing out an objective downside to SE's design decisions with FFXIV; there's nothing really to debate there, and they'd admit it themselves. It's the price of doing business with such a strongly vertical approach to itemization. There are benefits, too - which they feel outweigh the downsides - but nonetheless, wasted effort is a clear side effect. My second point was expressing a very reasonable level of doubt about SE's ability to build a truly flexible and efficient graphics platform, which is not the same thing as making an assumption myself. My last line, admittedly, is a bit in the grey area, but that was more a summary than the main thrust of the item.
Guess what, we got the same types of answers back in FFXI. Answers like 'PS2 limitations' and "we'd have to basically make a new game". And then they made a new game and didn't make it completely future proof. So making another new game probably won't solve any of the problems you have with FFXIV, you'll just get a new game with new problems.
"After ten years, finally headed to Sharlayan... absolutely stoked"
Yeah, definitely. It's no small thing. To be completely honest it's almost a miracle that ARR hit the ground running and became a huge success, and the success is still going. It's clearly something that SE never expected either since they were ill prepared for 2.0's launch and had to add servers on the fly. I honestly don't expect SE to make another MMO for some time since the genre as a whole is on its way out the door. But I do think that it will be back in some form eventually.
Honestly, I think that if SE did another FF mmo, it would probably play very much like FFXIV, with FFXIV-similar content cycles and so it goes. SE wouldn't risk making a sandbox MMO and would probably go with a themepark style again, which, at the end of the day, make me rather wish that they would just improve FFXIV in any way they can instead of re-making things for some QoL and maybe graphics updates.
Also, that MMO would probably try to include console players and maybe even mobile players so yeah. There will always be limitations (even with PC players, you can't just make a high-graphic-driven game and leave a bunch of players with not so potent systems in the dust).

If we were ever to get another FF MMO, just put it in Ivalice. All your races are already set up, all your lore is set up, you just have to make the gameplay systems.
MMORPGs will always be somewhat limited. It's their nature. They are the most complex games to develop. They have to rely on the server code as well as your own machine.
XIV simply has some more limitations and bad code thanks to the 1.0 failure and the rush to develop 2.0 as fast as possible plus the support of the already archaic PS3 at the time, carrying some bad coding from 1.0.
They also never forsaw in their wildest dreams that XIV will become this massive success. It was built to be a small MMORPG and generate enough income to cover the costs of 1.0 shutdown plus a small revenue.
And today we ended up with a very limited game.
we need to understand something important, FF14 did come back from very far, they was expecting at best to get as much population than FF11 at his best.... means 500.000-600.000 people.... what did lead to the server trouble at the release.... without forget that they had promise to release the game on ps3, forcing them to create the game like it was created....I'm not making assumptions, though. do they can change stuff, yes they can, they have done it in the past, the trouble is do they will have the support of the company when the game is doing fine like this. ff14 is victim of his success and the fact that some people in SE company try to continue some license and do game far too big that are barely covering the cost (yes i look at you ff15 and kh3). we can argue about the fact that the game need change and they will argue back that they have too little people and cash for this, what is sadly right!
you do realize they wasn't able to add viera male and hrothgar female because it's too costly?
