As an add on to this; keep in mind that the bloody creator of the Viera and their lore confirmed he wasn't the one going 'nope'. The creator of the lore did not object to male Viera being playable. I mean, come on - doesn't that at least say something? So wheres the respect for Ronso/Hrothgar FFX never restricted them ever they are perhaps one of the best races in FF(my opinion) yet their established presence in the ff franchise is being rewritten in FFXIV while Viera is not so i ask Why is Viera this sacred holy cow of do not touch?
Because Viera garnered far more support to be made into a playable race than Ronso did. I can only assume that the dev team wanted to give the players Viera whilst still respecting their franchise origins and making sure the dev team isn't overburdened. This means Ronso fits the bill perfectly
Im fine with the gender lock. It adds a uniqueness to them, sets them apart from other races. Personally, i also feel there's enough feminine or cute males as is and am ok with no male viera. While it'd be nice to have another masculine female, i can see the need to counter balance a female-locked race with a male locked one, and female hrothgar isnt something i'd play anyways, so im not miffed.

As long as the lore for both races is changed in a way that allows the presence of the other gender to make sense, I'm totally down for removing the gender-lock.

Just re-subbed a few days ago and it finally let me back on the forums today so I can post. x_x
This definitely has my vote. SE teased us a lot with fan art of both male and female Viera (even if one of those circumstances was for april fools, I forget), and so I was looking forward to making a male Viera once the race was officially announced for FFXIV. The Hrothgar have no appeal to me, a male gamer... So if I changed my race, I'm limited to only female Viera. I could easily just play a female Viera, but I've never played female before, and it would throw me off for a while, lol. It's definitely out of my norm.
As far as lore, one of my long-time friends from this game pitched ideas proving that they could circumvent that in NNNUUUMEROUS ways. I really like the thought of, "a whisper of the wood hearing the call of Hydaelyn" idea very appealing. Male Vieras DO EXIST in lore, though. Don't say otherwise. This is also what is upsetting a lot of the fanbase.
In any case, this is clearly causing one of the biggest uproars I've seen since 1.0... Square Enix, y'all need to stop ignoring the fanbase YET AGAIN. You PROMISED to never gender-lock a race since 2.0 came out. So the decision to do so again is not boding well for you whatsoever, and you're LOSING your fanbase. According to numbers I've seen from the OP's likes as of an hour ago, among other threads and topics on other websites, only a VERY miniscule amount of people are happy about the race/gender issue... I'm going to say less than 10% to give myself a safe ballpark range, since I don't see an opposing source as official as this thread can get.
Hello,
I'm just a normal player that was really hoping we'd get male Viera, preferably the tall, slightly muscular ones like the concept art. I personally don't care that Viera were female only in previous games because the devs and storytellers can always adapt the lore of FFXIV for it to make sense. I'm still hoping that the devs will add male Viera in the future as a playable race.
As for Hrothgar, them being added doesn't bother me at all. Some people like them, and that's giving them an option to play a character they'd like. I'd like to see female Hrothgar as well, because there are people out there who'd like to play that too, and I'd like them to have that option as well.
The Universe is a dark place.
I'm trying to make it brighter before I die.

Here to show support for male viera and female hrothgar. Substantially turned off by the decision to gender lock.
Lore doesn’t need to be changed. It’s just the vocal minority using it as an excuse when it’s a debunked reason.
Miqote males are just as rare as viera yet there are thousands running around. Ronso females are absolutely a thing.
Just showing my support. I was considering changing to male viera depending on how they looked in game. So I do hope they reconsider putting them in the game.
+1 for Bunny Boys
