looking at the blu magic page, looks like ffxiv version aligns very closely with the vast majority of iterations of blue magic and blue mage in its implementation. The most common factor is learning skills from enemies, and conditional spells like white wind, mighty guard, doom, missle, bad breath, 1000 needles, self destruct etc.

kimahri has access to these type of spells, as well. only the non blue mages from non ff games seem to be that different

I'd say blue mage in XIV is more of an oddity since it has like double the spells of a normal blue mage discounting XI and has RNG attached to learning it's skills--something it only shares with XI BLU which was still able to do current content on it's release.

catomancer, vampire, khimari, gun mage, XI blue mage, Quistis, explorers BLU, were more physical based BLUs and had physical weapons though vampire could do pretty much anything.

Strago, Quina, V BLU were more of the magey mages, I mean I guess you could count enemy materia? but...Also yeah I feel like goblin punch has been in more games than level 5 death has tbh.

Also again as I've stated learning has only been fun when it was khimari, because you could offensively use lancet to tell if a skill was learn able. Everything about BLU mage could aesthetically be done through job quests since, let's be honest, most people used a guide when even going for blue magic to begin with. That includes XIV, I mean the book even just tells you where the blue magic is, iirc.

Back before we got a BLU, when it was all theorycraft, one of the possible BLU routes I hoped they'd go down was Kimahri style.

Short spear with focus user, reverse RDM combat style, close in melee DPS that jumps out to go through a casting phase that has a heavy focus on monster abilities.

Yeah, I recall someone even speculating it'd use hammers? as either a dps or a tank, so MNK finally has a blunt buddy.

I've played through everything BLU, now, minus the special achievements, and I honestly enjoyed the journey. I just don't feel like it was enough, that it did the classic and well-loved job the justice it deserved. There may be more to come in the future - I'd bet on it, in fact - but it will likely just be more of the same. More Carnivale puzzle fights, more spells, more solo level grinding.

However, I'd say that SE has painted themselves into a corner with the way the job is put together; reworking it to be a real job would simply be too time-consuming an effort. It'd need to be rebuilt practically from the ground up, as so many of its basic concepts just don't mesh well with a standard job. They don't WANT BLU's rampaging through Duty Finder Sastasha with thirty-odd abilities while their poor newbie party members are plunking away at their two-button rotation, for instance; the design decision to make any learned spell available from level 1 just won't fly on a normal job.

The devs had the chance to create a balanced job, but made a sideshow, instead. Honestly, I think it's too late to backtrack, now; the costs in development time would simply be too steep.

Pretty much this, there haven't been any feedback threads on blue mage has there been?

I'd love for them to rework BLU into a full job but my hopes are not high. =/

Honestly what I'd want right now is for the job to be no so useless really. I've barely touched it since I got it to 50 in no small part because I've nothing to do on it. Restricting it to lvl50 is really silly at the very least it should be lvl60. Not only that but we should be able to do roulettes or at least have that option to do it or be able to use it with our squadrons so we can level it in that as well while learning some spells. The honest problem with the whole thing is that it's TOO limited to be enjoyable for me. If it's going to be a solo job as well I should be able to get all the spells without having to rely on other people, it gets frustraiting to learn some spells because you have to kill primals that you cannot solo at lvl50 at all or get the spells any other way.

I just don't know how people were able to manage unlocking all the abilities. For me, as someone who has maybe 3-4h a week I can spend playing the game (at most), it seems a virtual impossibility.

My friend did it on a similar schedual, granted we boosted him and just carried him through the primals. Riveting gameplay
