I personally always find it amusing when people consider levelling other jobs "end game content"... when players says there's no contnet or nothing to do often get greeted with well your crafters arent 70 yet nor is your drg or insert job here....

Like the OP though i Miss the days of XI definitely but i also find it amusing when people say they don't have time for it. there were times where i would quite literally only play XI 2 a nights a week and still be able to participate in everything my LS did. einherjar limbus. dynamis sky. znms.. etc etc. and yeah ok sometimes it took you 40-50 minutes to get a party invite but thats really no different than waiting 40-50 minutes for a duty finder queue to pop.

one of the better things with XI though was things didnt feel so rushed. you could quite literally do what you wanted when you wanted where you could drop sky for a couple of weeks to focus on nyzul or salvage instead.. where as in XIV it's MUST DO THIS NOWWWWW or i wont get my weekly drop... and if i dont get my weekly drop ll fallllll behind... in many ways this game is even more time demanding than XI was because of that...

take a 2 week vacation here and your gonna be behind when you come back. take a 2 week vacation in XI and you were still with the rest of your group...

That's not what people usually mean when they talk about XI's time commitment. It's more about how everything... took... so... damn... long... YEARs of dynamis and sky and Limbus, waiting hours, or even days for a party, spending hours in said party grinding mobs, waiting for an airship, waiting for the next game day, or JP midnight, or for another 5 people to answer your mission shout... In 2004 I was 22 and had all the free time in the world for that nonsense. Today at 36, not so much.

It honestly didn't take "years" unless you didn't play often. The LS I led in XI made relics and mythics quite commonly. Yes, it is true they were a time commitment, but they only took "years" if you were super casual. And the only jobs that took days to get a pt on were the least desirable ones like pup, but you could still lvl them solo if you knew what you were doing. I would have to go on private when I was on rdm or brd because I was constantly assailed with pt invites. On less desirable jobs like blu or dnc you could even create your own "burn" pts on them. 6 dncs or pups or blu, could burn thru mobs faster than they could respawn which was crazy exp. There was also MMM which was one of the best ways to get exp pre-aby. You just needed to think outside the 6 man pull-pt box. And it forced me to talk to ppl and I made tons of friends I still have today and allowed me to do more because I had those in-game friends. I literally only say "hello" and "tyfp" in this game. I even just made macros for them so I don't have to type it in each time which is pretty sad for an mmo.

On the bright side, the long term goals at least were worth working toward since you knew what you were working for was worth it. This also made obtaining them much more thrilling. You were proud of that dagger, ring or suit of armor because they meant something. Nothing in this game means anything, literally nothing.

Thankfully that is not the current state of XI. They made absolutely everything much more time commitment friendly without making everything extremely common. In the current state of XI having a REMA weapon is almost required, but at the same time it no longer takes years, now its only months and that's with casual play. Gear is the same, instead of introducing new gear all the time, you just power up the old stuff. Relic gear from dyna, artifact gear, empy gear...all still used and its not uncommon for them to be bis. I would love if I could take the jse I got at 70 and slowly build it up by using all the content XIV has to offer instead of just buying tome gear every few months.

Me too. Leveling is not content. Its an annoying time sync that should be used to learn your job. But with the button smashing that happens it's seldom used as such anyway. That's why I like ESO's system where you earn points to unlock traits and abilities and your actual level syncs to the zone or dungeon your in.

To be fair, that has more to do with modern MMO battle systems rather than the community. In XI the battle system was so slow that you had plenty of time to talk in between using abilities, between pulls, while traveling, etc. In a game like XIV you just plain don't have to time to type, what with pressing buttons literally every 2 seconds while in a dungeon.
