How game changing is it to have savage gear? Because so far, I haven't felt like any gear upgrade was that meaningful. Maybe gear just doesn't matter as much in this game. Which would mean the main reward for clearing content is just clearing the content. So it doesn't matter how long the gear is relevant for.

How game changing is it to have savage gear? Because so far, I haven't felt like any gear upgrade was that meaningful. Maybe gear just doesn't matter as much in this game. Savage gear is only relevant for those who enjoy doing speedruns or optimization runs of the current tier, and for those who venture into any of the Ultimate fights, as you need savage gear in order to meet HP requirements and damage requirements. And, with the former, you also need VIT melds to survive some of the mechanics - even with Savage BiS (in UwU, I had 4 VIT melds and survived a mechanic with 200 HP - this was due to lack of a shield, but without the melds I would have died, so they are valuable cushioning).

For content outside of speedruning Savage and Ultimate, raid gear is not necessary due to lack of outgoing damage (e.g., survivability is not a threat in baseline gear because things just don't hit hard enough), a lack of necessity for optimization, and lack of an enrage in most content (so the damage you deal is less meaningful since you aren't racing against a timer).

This tends to be why I play, for the challenge and time spent with friends and loved ones, I've stopped farming gear after coils.

It is still not necessary for the content—everything, including Savage, can be beaten in the tier’s baseline crafted gear (though you will usually want pentamelds and VIT melds for Savage for cushioning, and typically only really good players can do Savage in full crafted—so BiS raid gear at least has more value in Savage for the average player). The only piece of content where it is absolutely necessary to have a BiS is Ultimate because you will not have the health to survive (and, as I said above, you’ll still want at least 4 VIT melds) or the damage to beat enrage; and, as I also said above, if you wish to do optimization or speedruns of current Savage, BiS is also necessary because you don’t optimize in anything other than the best.

But for casual content, normal modes, and even Ex primals, having BiS is not a necessity. I don’t aim for it for any jobs I don’t plan to take into Savage/Ultimate simply because there is no reason—I cleared everything save Sigmascape Savage and UwU during Patch 4.2 and 4.3 on my healers in i350 crafted gear only halfway melded because there was no need for me to aim for i370 on them if I wasn’t taking them into Savage raids.


That being said, if you don’t make use out of your job’s base rotation and toolkit, all the shiny new gear is not worth it. I’ve seen individuals with raid gear that they’ve gotten on a job (that they have either not played that often, or that they main and don’t understand the way the job’s rotation/toolkit works; I’ve seen both), and they do less damage than a tank in similar gear or less than a DPS in full crafted. When you see that happening, the gear is a waste because the player doesn’t have a solid foundation to make use of the walls built on it.

I know, I was agreeing really just in different wording, outside of raiding the gear doesn't serve a lot of purpose other than doing the same thing more, in my case with others who haven't beaten it yet like FC members who are catching up, etc. This is getting a little off topic though from my original reason in making this thread, I still think getting the gear only to use it more in the same fights is a waste of it's potential, and then a waste of it's utility when the ilvl is increased again and it's only value is in GC seals, an almost worthless currency unless you just LOVE making relics or playing solo with your squadron.
