There can always be exceptions. Code can be rewritten to make exceptions work. The code hasn't been chiseled onto marble tablets, much as some people here seem to think it has.
Sure there could be a workaround, an incredibly convoluted workaround that they're never going to do because it would be far, far simpler to implement a healer that uses healer gear.
