I left Novice Network over a year ago for the same reason. Most of the mentors are profoundly unhelpful people who spend more time bickering with other mentors and condescendingly lecturing new players on strictly following the meta with no regard for context than actually helping people. It seems a lot of them are the sort that know how to read a guide, but don't have an actual understanding of the underlying principles and don't let that stop them from acting like an authority. Unfortunately, SE has taken an entirely hands-off approach to mentors and NN, so what could have been a fantastic tool instead ranges from mediocre to downright awful.

Perhaps it has gotten better in the time since I left, but I wouldn't count on it.

I'm an original mentor, veteran mentor... I've had the status since the system was implemented. And when it first started, it was a crap shot. But, once they made the NN optional, things got better, fast. We occasionally have a scrub here and there, but they are usually squashed and quick. I'm kinda glad to see no one said anything bad about Sirens NN, XD.

I like helping people with their Job ideas, it's fun to help them visuallize and create the job they'd like to play most. Plus I make my own too, I'll post them eventually.

I dislike this talk of the meta when it is not appropriate. Why tell a sprout to not bother playing a samurai, when one doesn't even know if they intend to raid or not. Why jump down the throat of another sprout for simply saying, "If you want to give it a try, you can unlock it at lvl 50. If you like it, go ahead and stick with it." And then threaten to kick them out of the NN, all just for saying that one sentence? That is the irritating part. Maybe it is 100% true that other NNs are more than welcoming, but there should've been a way to hold these bad apples accountable aside from 'blisting' them, as a mod had told me when I reported that issue on the first page. It leaves a bad impression when they do things like this to a new player. I can't even say anything else because my main is a sprout.

The option for Mentors to kick people out of the network needs to be removed, as it is clearly being abused.

But honestly, you can get answers to most if not all of the questions you have through Google.

When I got the mentor status I gave a try to the NN. I left the same week.

It's not a serious thing. There was a lot of macro spam, trolls joining and getting kicked to join again to keep the spam. A lot of non FFXIV related chitchat.
I thought there was a place to help players with their problems and doubts, but it's not.

There should be chats for many types of subjects, where I can select the subject that I can help. A chat for Housing, Gladiator, dungeon, PVP. A general chat about everything is too much of information.

Selecting the right subject I, and many players, could filter unwanted chat lines about whatever I can't/Don't want to help.

For example, I would love to help about Tank role, but that's it, I don't want to answer about Bard, or housing, just because I don't know. And I would like to not be interrupted by the NN chat so many times during my gameplay, to read what the sprout is asking just to find out it's not tank related and I can't help. If we could join a specifc subject chat section, every time someone ask something, it would be tank related. You can take this forum as an example, it's organized, the NN is not.

The experience was normal, though veering a lot at times on casual chat. What I did appreciate though was that mos times when someone asked a game related question, the social chat took a pause, the question was addressed and then they resumed.

This is from a limited scope though, mostly Mon-Fri, between the hours of 6pm-9pm EST and random times during weekends.
Sargatanas has a pretty good novice network. Sprouts usually get good advice and the casual chat is decent most of the time.

Occasionally, a mentor who is jaded will start making comments about how they think FFXIV is bad or will say disparaging things about sprouts and the conversation can get negative. When that happens I'll say something about how new players are reading novice network and that we don't want to give them a bad impression so they'll to enjoy the game, keep playing and increase the player base. Usually that curbs the negativity. In some cases the negative mentor gets aggressive so I'll notify a GM and soon enough, the negative mentor is gone.

I think we are fortunate on Saragatanas that most of the mentors in our novice network are friendly, want to make sprouts feel welcome and want to help sprouts become excellent players.

I let them know and almost immediately, had a pair of mentors who said that the sprout shouldn't waste their time on the job. The only thing I said to the sprout after that was to give it a try, and if they like it, go ahead and play with the job as long as they want.

The two mentors jumped on my case about being a sprout and not knowing what I was talking about. I wish I had saved the screenshot, but I ended up just logging off for the night. One of the mentors, I reported for outright pedophilia comments made, which I don't think has gone anywhere.

If my server's novice network isn't busy kicking each other over petty arguments, some give outright false information. I don't want to turn this into a rant post with other examples of things I've seen on my current character, but it just bothers me because some sprouts are getting bad information, others are quitting the network over the petty fighting, and some, like me, just stop paying attention to the network entirely. I don't know if this occurs on other servers, and maybe I'm just caring a little too much, but shouldn't mentors be held accountable for their actions?
It's fine to tell a sprout that a job isn't performing well in the end game meta but I don't agree with saying that any job is a waste of time. If you find a job to be fun, play it! If that job isn't getting picked for end game parties, it isn't like we can't level multiple jobs or anything. Anyway, who knows if jobs that are less popular today won't get patched to be highly desirable later?

I hope your novice network improves soon. When I was a sprout, there was awhile when the novice network on my server was being dragged down by a few really abrasive mentors. They seem to be gone now. Since I rejoined novice network as a mentor, it has been mostly helpful and positive conversations and people who keep bad attitudes aren't tolerated for very long.

The option is necessary, even if abused.

I dunno. Like I said, maybe I'm just caring too much for no reason. I've only logged into mateus once so I could refresh the demo timer, so if others are saying it's fine over there, I'll take their word for it. I'm just using the networks that I've gotten into on Aether, and go from there. Should be losing my sprout status soon anyhow.

Being a mentor doesn't mean much sadly since most mentors just leave when a extreme pops up in the roulette and all said duties are fairly easy to unsync to unlock it so most wont have a clue when the duty pops up sync'd (sephirot really only one that keeps his challenging aspect unsync'd to this day).

I feel they should ban(like for 2-3 months)you from being a mentor/mentor roulette if you just ditch duties too much, not making it impossible to unlock the mount but making the process longer as a punishment ,vote abandon is fine since (presumably) you took time and effort to teach people stuff.

The novice network on moogle is great always a fun place to chat and everyone helps each other out even in company workshop stuff.
