In order to make gear dyed with any color like they want, they need to separate color from item model so that color can be swapped out easily, without needing an entirely new model for each individual color.

The Color ID system that they have planned for 2.0 will do just that, and Yoshi has stated that items will have between 24 and 32 dye colors each, a vast improvement over the current situation.
I think they're missing the big picture.

Sometimes there needs to be a logical person that says: "We will not be implementing colors for all gear until 2.0 because colors are lnked to the item name and that cannot be changed until 2.0"

I hate to say it, but it's a management or leadership problem. This should have been stopped.

Couldn't they have made color be applied just like materia? They could have made an NPC manage the dyeing, even if it required a crafter with high enough skill to provide the mats.

If the color changes for 1.20 are temporary, why bother making the change at all?

Even if it is temporary and they are planning future changes that will allow all gear to be dyed, doesn't that implicitly mean that they will have to delete or change the temporary gear?
