Forum etiquette - double-posting vs separating ideas?

carefully researching a post that takes an hour, only to have the usual band of ****-posters latch onto the most generalized part of the post and go "Not everyone..."

Have some personal responsibility for what you decide to post in a public forum instead of trying to shift the blame to others.

If you post something that can be considered inappropriate or unnecessarily rude then you may get called out on it. Instead of reflecting on why you maybe shouldn't have posted an unnecessarily rude generalization you turn around and blame other posters for disagreeing with you about it.

If you can't take the heat then get out of the kitchen.

Disagreeing /=/ bleep posting.

If you avoid posting inappropriate and/or combative things the less likely you'll get called out for being rude. This is a simple concept.

Also just fyi, if you dig through my post history I always call out people, if I see it, for making massive generalizations about cultures; be it western, eastern, or generalizations about NA, EU, or JP.

They aren't necessary and I really dislike when people throw others into stereotypes or generalizations based on where they might live or what culture they are. You can easily have a discussion or a debate without that nonsense.

Which is what happened here. You've found insult, where none was implied. You took a deliberate gross exaggeration and made it personal.

No one has said they are personally insulted or personally offended by you at all so you might be putting too much stock in your assumptions again, but a lot of us seem to disagree with your attitude that is for sure.

I've occasionally double posted when the two posts have wildly different content, but I try to keep it to one post most of the time. On occasion I've wanted to go as far as triple posting, but haven't because I don't want to look like I'm spamming.

On the subject of snipping, when I first saw it I did get the impression that it seemed rude. It seemed like the quoter was saying, "blah blah not worth my time." I've since learned that it's just common practice to get around quoting dozens of lines of text and that typically nobody is meaning to be rude when they say it. While I do like to quote relevant lines that I'm replying to, sometimes that can also seem rude, as it can make it seem like I only read those lines and not the person's entire post. Snip at least gives the indication that you're replying to their entire thought, not just a part of it.

I'm still not a big fan of the actual term 'snip' though, as it still seems well... snippy. I usually just do a "-" or "..."

I use snip quotes if I have to. Since I'm on mobile, I can't edit my posts; snipping ensures I can get my opinion out without having to worry (much) about character limit.

Just use the desktop site on your mobile device. Fully featured and most, if not all smartphones can navigate it with ease.

What? Why is it rude the snip posts? This is the second time somebody said it. How is that rude? I do it because I'm responding directly to the person I snipped. This feels like an overly sensitive reaction to a minor thing.

I disagree. If it's rude to snip a post then it is also rude to not click on the blue button that takes you back to the post in question.

I don't even consider it rude, per se. Just an inconvenience to others.

You may be replying to someone specific, but other non-specified readers are going to be reading it as well, and you replying to "snip" is discourteous to the reader. It's not necessarily about the person you're quoting.

Fair enough. Although I mostly just snip more out of habit because I tend to respond to specific individuals. It usually just comes down to how lazy I'm feeling and how many folks I'm replying to at once. Or if I'm just being lazy and don't bother to snip.

By the way, have been meaning to ask this for a while. I don't really know how to read Eorzean that well haha. What does that say in your signature? I've been curious about that for a while.

Anyways, if it's two separate topics, it's fine to double post. But as others have pointed out, it's more of a personal choice than an official guideline. You won't get in trouble either way.

As far as snipping, it's okay as long as you are not doing it to twist the meaning of someones's post. If it's for the sake of brevity, you are okay.

If you are worried about stepping on someone's toes, just state you are why you are snipping the post. As in most things, it's a matter of being polite.

Back in 1.0, Marauder had a trait that where if they stood still long enough this message would pop up and you'd start parrying like crazy. I really liked the ability and back in ARR and kept requesting it a lot, and I mean a lot to be put back in somehow. Then we got Raw Intuition! Pretty similar in concept, so I was happy.

I just post whateva tha flag I want. It's not like having a high # of upboats does anything. The devs don't suddenly implement a feature or change something just cause a thousand people clicked a button.

Ahh, okay, I can see it now. Yeah, Raw Intuition is nice...then you go into a dungeon to do a wall pull and forget to bring anticipation. I've had that happen recently -_-

Like I said to Iscah, my own personal forum reading preference is to have the blue To Post button to catch up on context and not to read the same post so many times per thread.

You support that it's discourteous to the reader, and to some that may be true. But it's not universal, and not entirely worth going through all the extra effort for a reader who may or may not care.
