Forum etiquette - double-posting vs separating ideas?

It certainly doesn’t give you the right to generalize the lot of them. Personally, I post on forums because I’m bored. When I’m not bored, I’m typically not on them. Again, not out of some need to be validated by strangers on the internet.

Yet, somehow you personally took offense to a generalization that is very true for this forum, and all unmoderated/loosely moderated forums on the internet, because you felt that I was attacking you, when I was describing the behavior of people who add nothing to the conversation, because there is no moderator.

When there is low moderation, the amount of ****-posting goes up. Those are posts that add nothing to the thread, but exist entirely to inflate the users presence. That is just one thing people do, and it's very popular to do in Western and Eastern forums when the moderators are asleep, or absent. Prior to this concept, as I described before "forum games" exist where people post to the same thread, over and over with one-liners, it's entire purpose to inflate the user's post count, and visibility on the site by being the last poster to every forum game thread. This forum doesn't have this because it's against the terms of service to do it, and the posts-per-day limit lowers the rate at which the post inflation happens.

What? Why is it rude the snip posts? This is the second time somebody said it. How is that rude? I do it because I'm responding directly to the person I snipped. This feels like an overly sensitive reaction to a minor thing.

I suppose I have to repeat myself: It was to give you a different perspective. Because you seem to negate such things when you start making blanket statements like “all westerners are jerks that like to have dick-measuring contests on online forums because they have to prove who is the biggest and the baddest”. It’s cute that you think you’ve offended me though. Please do quote where I said I was offended or felt personally attacked by your statement, though. I’ll admit that it irritated me because it shows massive ignorance (and arrogance) on your part. And I have very little patience for either. But I hardly felt “attacked” by you.



There are moderators for the NA forums; usually you see them post in the Technical Support section when people go there for assistance.

There are posts that are removed when reported, as well as users that are warned and banned for repeated reports. Mayhaps they aren’t as active as they are on JP forums; I wouldn’t know. I don’t frequent the JP forums. But moderation occurs when reports are submitted. If posters aren’t submitting reports, how are moderators—especially for a forum that is busy as this one can be sometimes—expected to moderate? Unless you expect them active read each and every thread every day. Such demands would probably be impossible.

Umm... No, it does not. It's for reading convenience. When those of us use mobile, snipping posts allows us to avoid hitting the post limit since we can't edit on mobile. Sometimes, don't want to have a huge wall of texts when posting a reply, so it's snipped. It's not rude at all. That's a huge reach you've made there.

And thus that's why some threads have circular arguments. If you "snip"'d the context, it makes you belligerent towards the poster, and the will be taken as such.

Threads enter circular arguments because people choose not to listen to what others are saying. Or are stubborn. They don’t become circular because people use “snip” in quotes. If you interpret “snipping” quotes as belligerent, then that seems like an issue you should deal with. It certainly doesn’t apply to everyone.

My post has nothing to do with respect; it’s about you ignoring what people are saying. Though that certainly does prove to be a show of complete and utter disrespect. The comment about being rude was with regards to your generalizations; those are rude, as others have already said.

What are you even getting at? Again with the completely unrelated responses. It’s clear we cannot have an actual conversation since, again, you are ignoring what I’m saying, and choosing instead to insert some completely off-topic narrative/response. Have a nice evening.

And thus, the reach goes even further. It does not make the responder belligerent for simply snipping a post. It's one thing if you don't like your posts being snipped, but its another to say that the responder is belligerent for simply snipping. The context of their response would make them belligerent, not the fact that they are shortening the quoted text for convenience's sake. Case in point:

2. I replied saying you shouldn't generalize billions of people like that because it is rude and ignorant.

3. You reply again and say there are studies that prove your generalization to be true.

4. I reply and say, no, the studies you linked are not proof and you would have known that if you had read my reply properly and bothered to read the articles you yourself linked.

I am not going to comment much about your comment on western people having big egos, because others have already posted about this. But I wanted to ask how is snipping posts makes it feel like the other is seen as an idiot or that their view means nothing? I mean I dont quote someone that I feel that had nothing to say. Mostly I quote those that I want to discuss with thus they have piped my interest in some way. It might not always be in a good way but I would never see that person as an idiot and I would also never feel like the other person looks down on me when they snip my post. You can see it that way and its fine but its a bit of an surprising view.

On topic: There are forums where you will have mods that put out a warning if you double post. So thanks to that I mostly keep it in one post if barely anyone has posted since then. If others already posted I will often just start a new one. Because if the topic is going on (maybe even to a new page) then the new argument might be overseen, also it could get a bit too big. But if there is maybe just a handful of new posts and still on the same page I might edit it.
