Please don't insult people by assuming they cannot afford this and are therefore simply bitter and resentful of those who are better off. That is not the issue.
I avoid Free to Play games because I don't like the business model. I prefer a sub-game because everything is included and the playing field with other players is relatively level - more time gives an advantage but more cash does not.
FFXIV has been blurring the line between the sub and Free to Play model for some time, with the release of the App and this new currency they are basically erasing it.
They are already getting away with more than they should. We pay a sub and yet storage and sales on the Market Board are very limited, however we have the option to pay more and rent extra storage and MB slots.
Now we can pay even more to access retainers, our inventory and the MB at any time, something that will give people a clear advantage in-game. The App will also see most of the available storage locked behind a paywall. (To anyone saying extra retainers don't give you an advantage, all I can say is you are not using them right; they are little gil generating machines and the more you have, the more you can sell, giving you more influence on the markets). That is Pay to Win, if your enjoyment comes from Crafting, Gathering or the MB.
Also note that they said there may be more things to buy with this new currency depending on the reception. So it might not affect you personally now, but if they decide to expand on this model it probably will.
Right now I'm looking back at my time in WoW with new appreciation (I unsubbed in WoD)
Storage - more than I could ever use, included in sub
Alt characters - included in sub
Glamour - all available in-game
MB - unlimited slots
Calendar - in-game
Cash Shop purchases - all account wide
Mailing alts - possible
Chat outside game - free
App - free and unlimited (I believe they are dropping support for it soon though)
So no, I am not going to be 'grateful' for what we have. I am going to do what every savvy consumer does, compare the product to the competition and decide whether I'm being offered value for money, and as things stand right now, I'm not sure I am.
