I do somewhat like the idea of gear checks, I just don't want to see it become as crazy as WoW's dungeon finder, that won't let you enter heroics unless your gear score is high enough.

I think there are better ways to keep people from skipping content, like not letting them progress unless they do a chain of dungeons in order, etc.
The WoW gear score was ridiculous. This is when decision making should be left to the player. The gear check should act as a barrier that guarantees you will not be able to proceed. What they should have done prior to the Ifrit fight; was introduce gear with fire resistance. This would ensure that you go through previous content to obtain the gear. It also correlates with players skills. You're only getting the gear in order to survive the onslaught. You still have to be able to actually kill him.
