If the goal is to have the greatest variety of combinations, then no rigid synergy is definitely the way to go. Synergy dependencies cause some classes to be less valuable if the synergy is not present. To remain competitive, the players are then forced to choose between very few rigid meta compositions to make the most of the synergies. I think it would be much healthier for the game if all classes were equally desirable regardless of other party members.
