I like having the crafting mentor icon next to my game because I often get /tells from newbies asking me if I can craft them gear.

Yes.
I've been playing for almost a year now and Mentors are by far the most toxic people I've encountered. They don't help or give advice or anything, they just do it so they have the crown symbol next to their name and so they are 'special'.
In the beginning mentors were the first to 'git gud' and say why I don't know what to do while I had the newby leaf icon next to my name and also said that I was new.
All the help I got where from non mentors, at least those people where nice and didn't had this 'I'm a mentor so you need to treat me better' flair on them.
To this day I still see it happening a lot that mentors just insult new players for making mistakes and that they need to look up stuff online.
From all the people I've met, mentors are most of the time the horrible ones. Right now when I see the mentor symbol I immediately get uncomfortable get defensive and ready to put that player on blacklist if needed.
I was unaware I was an official SE representative. Good to know.
No mentor represents the company, that's what they have GMs and support for. Mentors are people who have played the game for a while, are expected to know how to play all roles, and were decent enough players and human beings to receive player commendations a certain amount of time. And that last part is what makes us mentors not SE's representatives, but the community's, because without comms you wouldn't get the crown.
That would be an off-putting experience with or without the crown. But to a newcomer who doesn't yet understand, they may think that a mentor is something akin to a GM with less power. And to those people, it may be a bit off-putting to see people who you assume have been given some level of 'power'/influence by SE themselves acting in the way that many mentors do.
#NotAllMentors
I'm sorry you kept running into people like that but rotten apples are there from all demographic groups. A lot of new players start yelling at mentors who try to help even after asking for advice or just act rude. So I guess we need to abolish the new player population, too? All you can do is report and hope that crown gets taken away

The main issue is attaching a reward to doing so many mentor roulettes. All this does is cause mentors to lose focus on the real purpose of being a mentor in the first place.
Side note - 300 commendations is a complete joke. It should have been more like 3,000.
I keep my mentor crown off because I'm personally embarrassed by it.Mentors are people who have played the game for a while, are expected to know how to play all roles, and were decent enough players and human beings to receive player commendations a certain amount of time. You don't need comms to get mentor status. I've seen a few who received their mentor status by meeting the crafting requirements. I was in a potd 51-60 and ran into a mentor who only had 1 level 70 combat job with all other job/classes either below 20 or not even unlocked. He also only had one crafter at about level 63 with all other crafting around 20 or below and a 70 miner with sub 20 btn and fsh. He was playing a archer and had no idea what he was doing obviously. This isn't the first time I ran into a mentor like this.
In NN a few days ago, someone mentioned that they were new, and had gotten mentor status after only 22 days of playing, also through the crafter requirement. (seems to happen more often in preferred worlds due to 100% exp buff on all jobs)
I also see pf groups looking for quick trial clears to reach a 1000 dungeon runs so they can get mentor status.
I really think the mentor idea is a good one and there are quite a bit of genuinely good and helpful people that use it, but the ones that stand out are the terrible ones or the mean ones and the system is terrible.

They revamped the system since I last checked, then, and not for the better. won't lie, I was surprised when SB came out and they didn't up the requirement to have one job of each role at 70. Because, setting aside how knowing the game at 60 is not knowing the game at 70, uh, 3 job potions later...
Except you can only use 1 Job Potion per account, cannot apply multiple potions. They revamped the system since I last checked, then, and not for the better. won't lie, I was surprised when SB came out and they didn't up the requirement to have one job of each role at 70.
