such a ignorent comment really and to everyone else saying solo content has no place in MMO's are you freaking retarded? Crafting, Questing, Gathering, Farming mats, Leves(although can be both group and solo), GC quests...etc...all solo content. If i have time to only play an hour on a certain day why cant i have the choice to quickly run a solo instance then go on with my day...people arent always on to do stuff with and it leaves me waiting in uldah until LS members log on or i shout for group and wait an hour to get started

While the items you get from such content shouldent be above group raid bosses it still should be significant(Depending on difficulty of the content).
I could see a system where puzzles must be solved in order to advance into the next room of a instance and after entering that room you are treated to a wave of mobs (like defense leves) that you must defeat in order to advance and rinse / repeat untill you get to a boss.

A traditional trash mobs > boss room > trash mobs > boss room could work but this kind of content i feel is much better suited for partys (especially if the trash mobs are difficult and need strategy to complete). Iv seen Solo instances in other MMO's where my friend simply walked to the entrance, zone in, complete it within 15-20 min get loot / money and get out. Overall this sytem seemed much more enjoyable than simple leves, as there were certain enviromental hazards that he needed to avoid as well as kite the boss into, although the combat system in the game was very different the same thing could be done with FFXIV.

FFXI had two examples of this, one being an ENM called "Pulling the Strings" that dropped rare/ex job exclusive enchanted items (except PUP, where it dropped attachments), and the other one being Maat (and the corresponding LB5 fights for ToAU and WotG jobs), which you had to do at least once for level 75, and doing all 15 of the mainland job fights got you a cap to prove you've done it.

By the way, to people complaining about "FFXIV offline" and such, there's a reason for such content to be soloable. It means you need to be strong enough on your own merit to do it. You can't just get a bunch of more competent people together and half-ass it. By being forced to do it solo, you prove you have what it takes. Just because an MMO is online, doesn't mean it can't have ANY solo content.
    you said well enough ^^

They work well in Aion as lower-mid level gap-filler content. They work well in Rift too.

Solo content has place in an MMO, but never be a main focus. Solo content should be for moments where you don't have time to assembly a party. Over solo content, I would prefer duo content. You can generally find at least one other person to group with.

The more types of content the better in my opinion. I am totally for the OP's idea, and would like to see more content designed around small parties (4 players) as well. Variety is the spice of life!

    its not a bad idea
unlike FFXI most classes can solo decently so balancing solo content shouldn't be very hard.
but the game atm doesnt have enough group dungeons so its premature to suggest them

    My view for MMO is

    1. MMO is a game you play online, you can't stop, you can't puase, once you die, the server auto-save it.

    2. In MMO, you meet people, interface with other player, so when necessary or conditionally, you can form a PARTY.

    3. As for distribution of content, it depends on how many player ONLINE SIMUTANEOUSLY. This is not something you can control.

4 man party should get lots of content
8 man party should get some content
16 and above should get very little content - barely 16 ppl can play online simutaneously.
As a result, solo player should get MOST content to play with.

So of course, i agree there should be more 1~4 players content so the game can attract more player to play as a whole.

Starting levels solo content and low man should be the majority of the game.

Mid levels 4-8 man stuff should take a focus

endgame it should all be 4-16+ people. This is where your guilds and endgame groups form... you cannot have an endgame group with solo focus/lowman focus. (make endgame mainly solo focused people will get to endgame and simply quit)

Solo content outside the starter levels I feel should only provide maby 2-3 hrs max of gameplay per day, I see this as more then generous... if you play more then that get in a group.

Solo content should NEVER have a focus in mmos. that is what offline games like Skyrim and Final Fantasy 1-13 (less XI) are for.

Solo Dungeons I think would be ok, if you are getting some kind of points for companys or something. But any items from a dungeon that is solo based should be extremely subpar compared to the rest of the games non-solo content.
