You forgot ultima online, one of the, if not the first graphical mmorpg and anyone could have any name.Yeah, poor arguments and trolling aside, don't remove the surnames feature, that's just.. dumb, really.
Do you have any idea how rare it is to find a game that doesn't have the stupid, arbitrary limit of one use per name? To this day, I've found three. Phantasy Star Online, Phantasy Star Universe, and Final Fantasy XIV; and the first two achieved it by using a system of numeric character ID's that'd make very little sense here, not to mention would be very difficult to implement and make user friendly giving the differing game formats. Besides, I like the forename, surname, format.
Even setting aside the fact that the level of coding needed to remove surnames would be really, really big - just think how many game systems have to call on our character name, it's a lot more than just name display and chat - the idea is still stupid. It's stupid even setting aside my first argument; how do you handle changing it to a one-name-per-player system? Tell huge numbers of players 'Sorry, you've gotta put up with being Forra#12 for the rest of your time here, or delete the character you worked so hard on, then spend hours trawling for a name that isn't already in use'?
